Call for Volunteer Judges (in person and virtual) 2017 PR Xchange Awards Competition

CMLE members: we encourage you to attend conferences (virtual and in person), so you can hang out with people who do thing things you do in libraries. There are many conferences across Minnesota that would be interesting to you, and the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference is coming to our (general) area this June! If you have not been to one yet – picture more than 25,000 library people, from every corner of the library world, with every job and every title possible in libraries, all gathered together to learn, network, and to have fun!

If you have experience in marketing, graphic design, or communications, and can get together virtually on April 4th, this would be a fun introduction to the conference!

Visiting CMLE Libraries! College of St. Benedict

Clemens Library

This week I visited the College of St. Benedict’s Clemens Library. Thanks to Director Kathleen Parker for inviting me over and touring me around the library so I could see all their wonderful things, and meet some of the library staff!

It’s Sarah! And a book!

Everyone take a moment to wave at Sarah Gewirtz, as she shows us the latest book group reading for the library: “What if I Say the Wrong Thing? 26 Habits for Culturally Effective People” by Vernā Myers. I had not seen this book before this visit; but I think it will be added to the CMLE Librarian Professionals reading group in an upcoming month, as everyone works to reach out to community members. Sarah has also facilitated some Information Literacy work across CMLE academic and high school libraries; and we definitely want to repeat that program! We all have more things in common than might be immediately apparent; and Info Literacy is a core need for all libraries in serving their communities. Continue reading Visiting CMLE Libraries! Five library marketing trends for 2015

bustle...Library marketing has become a part of many library jobs. Whether it’s helping out with social media or working on a print publication, marketing is now a part of our jobs! Recently Tiffany McClary shared her thoughts on what 2015 holds in library marketing. “The trend toward providing useful, relevant content that people want to consume will continue,” she says. “[T]eams can take the information they share in the library—how to research a term paper, search for a job, find investors—and turn it into bite-sized tips for Twitter, blog posts, and ebooks.” The main ideas from the article are:

  • Mobile Marketing
  • Content Marketing
  • Visual Storytelling
  • Human Speak not Marketing Speak
  • People helping People

Do you have any other marketing ideas for 2015?

Marketing Idea: Library Shelfies

StackofbooksWith all of the media coverage about Ellen’s Oscars selfie recently, it stands to reason that everyone, including librarians have selfies on their minds!

However, selfies for libraries? Why not?

Q: What do you get when bookshelves full of books (and other items) pose for a picture?

A: A group “shelfie”!

I give a lot of credit to the Akron-Summit County Public Library for a great visual pun, and for a clever marketing idea too! The library has been staging “shelfies” of cleverly planned photos of book and other materials on its library shelves, and they are getting  smiles from their social media followers. Read this article to hear about some shelfies the library put together, and to find out how to follow the library’s shelfie exploits!  What a great way to get the creative energy flowing in library staff as they market materials and demonstrate their creativity and sense of humor too!

Note: The New York Public Library even got in the act by declaring a Library Shelfie Day on January 29th. Read the blog post for all of the details.
