Hang With CMLE: Upcoming Member Events!

CMLE provides opportunities for members of the library world to connect and get together in-person. This month we have several more opportunities and want you to know that you are invited!

These events all link to our page on Meetup.com where you can RSVP. And of course, email us with any questions: admin(at)gmail(dot)com.

Tuesday, March 10th: Susan Steinberg 2020 McNeely Creative Writer in Residence at St. Ben’s. The public reading starts at 7pm in Upper Gorecki and we can sit together for the author presentation. More info and RSVP here.

Wednesday, March 11th: Book Group Discussion (new location!) We will be meeting at La Casita in Waite Park at 5:30pm. We gather for dinner and everyone shares a book they are reading or have enjoyed. It’s really fun to hear the variety and recommendations and a great way to get to know people.
More info and RSVP here.

Tuesday, March 17th: Crafters gather to chat and work on projects! Join us from 6pm – 8pm in the Array room at the St. Cloud Public Library. Whether you are a hard-core, life-long crafter, or if you just got started last week in trying to figure out how to thread a needle, you are welcome here.

Breakfast with Books Event

This event coming up in February sounds really fun and would be perfectly suited to our members! You will get to chat with authors and illustrators, play trivia, hear some Book Talks, win door prizes, plus enjoy a sit-down breakfast!

Tickets to the event do include 4 CEU hours. As a reminder, if you need a scholarship to attend an event like this, apply now!

Check out their website and take a look at all the authors and illustrators that will be in attendance!

Are you a Minnesota educator, librarian, bookseller, or publishing professional? You’re invited to join us at Books for Breakfast, celebrating its 25th anniversary!

On Saturday, February 2, 2019, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, at the Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, Minnesota, we’ll gather to learn, greet old and new friends, and enjoy a morning of books, books, books!

Our theme this year is “My Reading Community, Our Reading Community,” based on the six books writen by Lisa Bullard and illustrated by Christine M. Schneider, Renée Kurilla, Paula Becker, and Holli Conger (Lerner Publishing Group).

Red Wagon Books will be selling books. Authors and illustrators will be available to sign your books from 12:00 to 12:30 pm. Please support the Breakfast by purchasing your books at the event.

You may buy as many tickets as you like: bring your colleagues! Seating capacity is limited, so we suggest you buy your tickets soon.

Vote! Let’s have another social event!

The first one was so fun, we are already looking forward to the next one!

Members have requested that we move this around, to be sure everyone gets a chance to easily attend and enjoy dinner together. So we are setting up a vote, to let people give their ideas on a place you would like to visit for our March gathering. This will be the week of March 13, maybe Wednesday night (depending on the reservations available).

We have picked out a few places, all with good Yelp ratings and comments. Vote for the one that sounds tastiest to you, or that you have been meaning to try, or that you already love, or just sounds like a fun place to chat with your colleagues! (In some  smaller places, now and in the future, we might have to spread our group out. No problem for us! We can have fun chatting in smaller groups, and get to know each other in person as well as online!)

And if you have other thoughts, share them in the comment section, add them to the contact form, or email them to us at Headquarters.

Do you work in a learning organization?

photo-1459623837994-06d03aa27b9bA recent article in American Libraries Magazine caught my eye, and reflects what I believe about continuing education for ALL library staff. With change happening so fast, all library staff need to feel confident in their skill set,  and engaged in staying current in order to be relevant to library users.

The conclusion to the full article by Meredith Farkas nails it….”Professional development doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but it does require time. And library administrators must consciously choose to make this investment. It benefits individuals and connects them more to the profession, and all that learning comes back to enrich the organization. A learning organization is always improving, and that can’t happen without an intentional investment in professional development.”

CMLE provides low or no-cost events and also offers scholarships to attend events other than what CMLE offers. Need a substitute so you can attend an event? No problem….this is an allowable scholarship expense. Take a look to see how easy it is to apply for a scholarship now in order to keep sharpening your skill set!

In case you missed it – new library and author-talk event

We had a wonderful time at our event on May 5th that took place at the new St. Cloud Technical and Community College library!

Writer Jess Lourey started us out with an engaging presentation, walking us through her life and the events that led to her becoming a published author. Lourey grew up with stories, and she spoke about her high school English teacher who encouraged her writing. When receiving an award years later in her hometown of Paynesville, her teacher shared that he had actually saved one of her short stories, knowing she had talent and would become successful. Lourey’s path hasn’t been easy – her first novel was rejected over 400 times and she faced tragedy in her personal life. However, through the power of story, she was able to channel some of those situations and feelings into her writing. Lourey has written YA, magical realism, and her thriller Salem’s Cipher is scheduled to be released in September this year. She is also an award-winning professor of creative writing and sociology at St. Cloud Community and Technical College. Lourey will be presenting a TEDx talk about her upcoming book Better Than Gin: Rewrite Your Life, about the power of narrative therapy through fiction writing. Check back with us, we will keep you posted with where to find her TED talk.

ebooks minnesotaBeth Staats from Minitex gave a great presentation about the exciting new venture that is eBooks MN. As we know, our state has a flourishing publishing industry. This platform is taking advantage of that to share the materials with the wider public! You can download the app, and can also download books to read offline, all free of charge. Currently it is estimated 3/5 of the titles are aimed at children, but they are working on increasing their contents for adults. After all, we try to shop and eat local, why wouldn’t we read local too?

Finally, we were able to enjoy some tasty Mexican food and toured the spacious new library facility at the Tech College. Modern furniture, energy-efficient lighting, and comfortable group work areas (plus many additional updates!) all come together to create a fantastic space. You don’t need to be a student to reap the benefits of the library either – they offer library cards to community members! If you haven’t visited yet, go check it out!
