Last Newsletter till Fall! Stay in touch!

It’s that time again, CMLE members and library community! We take a short break from sending our weekly newsletter over the summer since we know so many of you are in schools (plus, we really appreciate being able to use the time to focus on other projects!!)

Of course, we’ll still be available by emailing admin@cmle.org. We’ll continue to put up articles of interest on our blog, and will be active on social media.

And we’ll continue to release new podcast episodes!! Our last episode of Season Five of Linking Our Libraries will be on June 27th, with a special Bonus Episode on July 4th.

Send us an email, drop by our office, join us for a podcast episode! Come camping with us! We hope you all have a rejuvenating summer filled with lots of good books!

Summer Break Time!

Our newsletter is taking its regular summer break!

We know a lot of our members and subscribers are off doing great summer things, and do not have time to sit around and read library newsletters. So we are joining you in that!

As we have done for several years, we will be taking a break from sending out the newsletter. There will still be some stories on our website, so we continue to share info and assorted cool stuff all summer. And we will keep up our social media presence – follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook!

And of course, we will continue to drop a new podcast episode every single Thursday – as we have for the last year.  We are, of course: Reading With Libraries!

  • Subscribe to our book group podcast on your favorite app! Search for Reading With Libraries, and hit subscribe.
  • Stream every single episode on our podcast page!
  • Get the full information from each episode, including drink recipes, links to books we read, links to the all the reader’s advisory material we discuss. And you can stream the episode there, if you wish!
  • NEW! We would love your support! Join our community of readers on Patreon! Official Office Dog, Lady Grey is all over the page – and she offers several nice rewards. (You will want to go browse her very cute pictures!) Support the show, and help keep Lady Grey in treats!

We are spending the summer working on some other great projects to help build our community of library people!

If you are around this summer, and want to talk libraries – we are here for you! Email us at admin@cmle.org, and we can come to your library, or we would be pleased to welcome you over to the HQ!

Have a great summer everyone!

Hundreds of Communities to Celebrate National Summer Learning Day on July 13

Summer Learning Day Logo

“BALTIMORE, MD –  What happens when learning takes a vacation during summer break? Research shows that summers without quality learning opportunities hold our nation’s youth back – year after year – in core subjects like math and reading, and in life experiences like college and career exposure. In fact, the math and reading skills low-income students lose each summer are cumulative and contribute significantly to the achievement gap between lower – and higher – income students. See Summer by the Numbers Infographic here.

That’s why July 13 has been designated as National Summer Learning Day – an advocacy day aimed at elevating the importance of keeping all kids learning, safe and healthy during the summer. Led by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), National Summer Learning Day unites the country in advocacy efforts and celebrations hosted by hundreds of partner organizations from libraries to parks and recreation centers and civic and non-profit groups that intend to double last year’s goal and reach two million youth served. NSLA’s Smarter Summers, Brighter Futures website supports promotion of National Summer Learning Day with an events calendar, summer meals locator, and user-friendly resources for families, summer programs providers, and municipal leaders – all to help keep kids healthy and engaged during the summer break.

It’s going to be a busy summer!

At CMLE, we are always thinking about ways that we can better assist our member libraries. That means we are often brainstorming new ideas and projects! Since this can sometimes get overwhelming, we decided to create a Summer Project List! Ours looks like this:

It’s full of ideas regarding our podcast, website, member social events, plus miscellaneous chores that never seem to get done. Summer is a great time to check those items off the to-do list!
To make the whole list less intimidating, we are breaking down each month with the accompanying items. June looks like this:

We really enjoy our work connecting our member libraries, and hope all of your summers are productive as well! Feel free to stop by and visit, we’ll be happy to talk libraries or put you to work on a project 🙂

Applications now open! 2017-18 MN Coding in the Classroom Leadership Cohort

Coding da Vinci - Der Kultur-Hackathon (14120891062)

Dear Educator, We are in the middle of a coding revolution! Computer science in the classroom plays an important role in preparing students of all ages for success in a wide variety of areas. In an effort to contribute to this movement, the MN Coding in the Classroom Leadership Cohort, an initiative of Code Savvy, is starting its third year and is seeking elementary, middle and high school school educators from across the state to participate.

The purpose of this Cohort is to develop knowledgeable, visionary educators who will help to make Minnesota a world leader in computer science education, and to help all students become creators, not merely users, of new technologies. Cohort participants will explore a variety of coding platforms and resources, gain insights into the IT industry through site visits and guest speakers, and investigate national and international standards for computer science education.

They will then develop, evaluate and share coding activities that integrate with school curricula and meet Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards and National Computer Science Teachers Association K-12 Standards. Additionally, participants will share their knowledge and resources with at least 10 other educators by creating and delivering professional development.
