What are We Doing This Week? (Dec 14)

What are we doing today? winter logo

We applaud our members who are working to stay home during this amazing, historic time – working to prevent the virus from continuing to move from person to person! Thank you for the work you are doing, and the sacrifices you are making to keep yourselves and your community safe. We are having the largest historic event of our lifetimes, so it will be good later to be able to say we all made good choices now!

And staying home can be hard!

We understand, and we are here to help!

Remember all the virtual activities we set up for you every day last semester? We still have all of them, collected and ready for you to use any time. Browse them and share any of that material with your community, or use for yourself! https://cmle.org/what-are-we-doing-today/

Here are a few things you might consider trying this week:

  • Let’s Learn: American Sign Language (ASL)
It’s always a good idea to learn some words in other languages! It’s good to help your brain keep developing, and it can help you to talk with all kinds of people.

A bonus to learning sign language: when we are all home, using sign language is very quiet, and can let you pass secrets to other people in your home who know also know ASL!

You can start with this video, to learn the alphabet in ASL:
  • Flight School Made Here!

Do you have a cardboard box nobody is using? Get an adult to help with the cutting parts, and make a game board that has the three holes you can see in that picture above. Then you can paint it, or use markers or crayons, to show how many points you are going to award for each hole.

Make paper airplanes – a bunch of them is fine, set up the cardboard so it will stand up and let planes go through the holes. You can look find instructions right here.

Then start throwing paper airplanes! (You can do this inside or outside.) What is your best score in two minutes? Are you playing with someone else? Who is getting the best score? Try standing back farther on each throw – see how far you can be and still hit one of the holes!
  • Kelp Forest Exploration

If you are in Minnesota, you know about going to lakes and seeing all the plants and animals that grow there.

In California, they have the Pacific Ocean, and big forests underwater of kelp plants! The Monterey Bay Aquarium has set up bunch of activities you can do to see these forests, and to learn about them.

(It says these are for grades three through five, but it’s just fine for anyone to look at this!)

You can start by watching their live cam of the kelp forest, and then keep going! Go here to get started!
  • P.E. With Joe

Being home all day probably means a lot of sitting. And it’s important to get up, get moving, and have fun!! So let’s all tune in to see Joe doing a new video each day!

Hop up! Start moving around! Have fun!! (It doesn’t have to be perfect – you are just moving and having a good time with us!) You can find all of them right here, or just do this one:
  • Now We’re Cooking: Rice and Beans

It’s good to know some tasty things to cook – and it’s not too hard to do a lot of cooking. Be sure your adult is nearby, and knows that you are cooking. There is some cutting with a knife here, and heating things on a stove – and it’s not fun to cook if anybody gets hurt!

Have you had rice and beans? It’s easy to make, you can eat it for lunch or dinner, or you can eat it on the side with something else. And you can put all the leftovers into the fridge, and have more tomorrow!

You can get the instructions right here. It’s very quick: only two steps!
