Join us here each week. We will provide activities for all ages, with online activities and some things to do on your own. It’s winter, we’re having a pandemic, and there should be a lot of staying at home. But that doesn’t mean being bored! Dive in here, and let’s do some fun things!
Virtual Travel
This week we are traveling to Norway on Google!
“Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe whose mainland territory comprises the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula; Mainland Norway and the remote island of Jan Mayen as well as the archipelago of Svalbard form Metropolitan Norway. The subantarctic Bouvet Island is a dependent territory of the Kingdom of Norway. Norway also lays claim to the Antarctic territories of Queen Maud Land and Peter I Island.
“Norway has a total area of 385,207 square kilometres and a population of 5,312,300. The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden. Norway is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east, and the Skagerrak strait to the south, with Denmark on the other side. Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. The maritime influence also dominates Norway’s climate with mild lowland temperatures on the sea coasts, whereas the interior, while colder, is also a lot milder than areas elsewhere in the world on such northerly latitudes. Even during polar night in the north, temperatures above freezing are commonplace on the coastline.”
Let’s Move
When we are all home, it’s easy to sit around and relax into watching Netflix or read all those library books on your TBR list. That stuff is good too – but let’s take a few minutes to get up, to bounce around, and to get some blood flowing! Join P.E. With Joe to have fun today!!
STEM Project: Make Ice Cream in a Bag
Get all the details here! “Have you ever made ice cream? It can be a lot of fun, and you end up with a tasty frozen treat! There is actually a lot of interesting chemistry that goes on behind making ice cream. For example, think about how you start out with refrigerated (or room-temperature) ingredients and then need to cool them down to turn them turn into ice cream. How do the ingredients change during this process? How important do you think it is that they are cooled to a certain temperature? In this science activity, you will make your own ice cream in a bag and explore the best way to chill the ingredients to make them become a creamy delicious treat!”
Academic Fun
Check out another good lesson from Common Sense Education! “Learn how opinions and facts affect the news and how to tell them apart.”
Info on this TED Talk: “With the advent of the Internet and social media, news is distributed at an incredible rate by an unprecedented number of different media outlets. How do we choose which news to consume? Damon Brown gives the inside scoop on how the opinions and facts (and sometimes non-facts) make their way into the news and how the smart reader can tell them apart.”
Arts and Crafts:Paper Plate Ladybug Craft
“Why not get them to make a few, and hang them from tree branches in your garden to make a bright and cheery display. You never know, you might even attract some of the real things!”
