One of our missions is to help to build communication across libraries, and we have a variety of strategies already going: our weekly newsletter, our Twitter account, and our assorted podcasts. And now we are adding a Discord account!
If you are involved in gaming, if you sponsor any Patron accounts, if you listen to podcasts – you probably know Discord already. There are servers (groups) to chat about almost every conceivable topic out there.
From Discord’s website:
“Discord is about giving people the power to create space to find belonging in their lives. We want to make it easier for you to talk regularly with the people you care about. We want you to build genuine relationships with your friends and communities close to home or around the world. Original, reliable, playful, and relatable. These are the values that connect our users and our employees at Discord….
“Discord is used by everyone from local hiking clubs, to art communities, to study groups. Discord has millions of people creating places for their friends and communities, talking for upwards of 4 hours per day on the platform. Discord is now where the world talks, hangs out, and builds relationships. Discord lets anyone create a space to find belonging—just like it did for Jason and Stan.”

So we are diving in here too!
We have set up a small Discord server (community), to provide a place for library people to chat and to share ideas. We have a few different rooms, for different topics to share ideas. You can jump on, share ideas there, ask questions, talk to other people who do library stuff.
We’re just getting started with this, so let’s all consider it a work in progress! Do you want different topics? Let us know! Not sure how to join in a conversation? No need to worry – just dive in and say something! It doesn’t have to flow from the prior comment; this is an asynchronous discussion. Ask questions, describe a program you are setting up, share something interesting.
Let’s see what we can do, together, to spread some communication around the library community. We have a lot of issues to share, and this is a place we can do it.
Ready to get started? Sign up at this link. If you already have a Discord account, you will just add our server to your list; if not, you can set up a free account.
