We know that stress in libraries has always been an issue – and our global pandemic, increasing library book challenges, and trying to navigate all the issues library people are facing are making things much harder.
It’s such an issue that we’ve talked about it several times on our website. You might try out our podcast Episode 511, our bonus episode to Season Two, or a few web resources we collected back in April, 2019.
And our colleagues at Prarieland Library System are on top of this issue! They are hosting a small (virtual!) library conference, for their First Friday in February event.
Spoiler Alert: I’m giving a presentation! I’m really excited about this, because I’ve done a lot of research into stress in library work. For a lot of us, the image of libraries are happy, fun workplaces where we just read books all day (as so many people think of us) is very far from reality. When I started this research, people were embarrassed to say they were stressed out at work. But I think one “good” thing that has come from the pandemic is more openness about the stress we all have, and more opportunities to address some causes.
