Happier in the Library: Celebrate the Small Stuff

It is not news to anyone reading this: working in a library is hard. Doing any kind of public-facing customer service work is always hard, and right now a lot of things are coming together to make it more complicated.

We can’t fix that for you. Sorry.

But this semester, we are going to provide small weekly stress-management/happiness builder ideas. They aren’t going to make all your issues magically solve themselves. But, everyone can use a reminder to take a step back and breathe.

How often are there huge accomplishments for you to celebrate? Big holidays? Enormous happy events? They happen, sure; but not too often.

So, on our quest for small happy things we suggest that you look at regular small holidays! Every single day there are some sorts of holidays you can celebrate – either by eating a chocolate chip cookie, taking your pet for a special walk, enjoying a maple tree, making banana bread, or other special small event that has been designated for the day. Dive into these! It doesn’t matter if anyone else is celebrating – find one that will be your own special small celebration and have a little joy in your day.

Have you heard about the 21st of September? Sure, you know it’s a day on the calendar. But! It’s also a very fun small holiday, and an entertaining way to raise some money for good causes. You can start with this one linked above, as he recaps the whole series of years that he has been doing this. Or, if you want to hunt for the oldest one and work your way forward in time, that would be fine.

There is no wrong way to celebrate a small holiday. So hit google and find out what celebrations are ready to enjoy on this day, this week, or this month!
