New graphic novels in Ebooks Minnesota

Check out these resources from our colleagues at Mintex! Share ELM books with your teachers and students – it’s great to have access to all these free books!

“Along with books around race and book award nominees (coming soon), Ebooks Minnesota just grew with additional graphic novels.  Several series have been added, including titles from the Capstone series, Graphic Science. This series contains graphic novels starring Max Axiom, Super Scientist, as he discusses topics like decoding genes, bacteria, electricity, global warming and other relevant STEM and science-related topics. Included are literary classics in graphic novel manga-style format, like Jane Eyre, The last of the Mohicans, The Scarlet Letter, and Les misérables. Some other recently added titles offer topics around history, including Laika: the 1st dog in space and Lake Placid Miracle.

All of these, as well as any other K-8 titles, can be accessed in Ebooks Minnesota and Ebooks Minnesota for Schools.  Keep your eyes on the Minitex Messenger for upcoming annoucements of more Ebooks Minnesota additions, and don’t forget to add the MARC records for these, and other new titles to your catalog.  Marc records for Ebooks Minnesota can always be accessed at Mackin’s Ebooks Minnesota Digital Collection site.”

Celebrate Today! National Pi Day

logo for Celebrate Today's Holiday

That’s right: every week we are going to celebrate some small holiday! We want you to join us in celebrating every week – because really, everyone needs a little more happiness in their lives.

Join us in celebrating the holiday just yourself, and take some small quiet time to enjoy it. Or, take our book and program ideas, and celebrate in a larger way in your library. Take a small, goofy opportunity to have a little more fun today! (We celebrate you in doing this!)

This is a fun day, and it’s a day to have some math celebrations. While I’ll say that math is not my strong suit, I am quite good at eating pie! If you also enjoy math, pie, or both things – this is your day to have some celebratory fun. And just in case you aren’t feeling quick on the math today, remember that the number Pi starts with 3.14159265359, so on March 14 we all celebrate it by eating pie. If you do nothing else today, enjoy a nice chicken pot pie, or a slice of chocolate silk, or a nice fruit pie. Make yourself happy today!

Try a few books today:

You can try a few pie, and pi, related programs:

  • set out a variety of different kinds of round things and measure the diameter and circumference, divide the circumference by the diameter , so patrons can all prove (again!) that it will be pi (3.14)
  • give participants paper and writing utensils, and let them start writing the numbers of pi they remember; the people who can come up with the most of correct numbers win a pi (pie) related prizes (maybe everyone else can have small hand pies to celebrate)
  • have a math-related joke-telling contest

Join us in celebrating the holiday just yourself, and take some small quiet time to enjoy it. Or, take our book and program ideas, and celebrate in a larger way in your library. Take a small, goofy opportunity to have a little more fun today!

BB: Minnehaha Depot

logo for browsing books: historical sites of Minnesota

This season, we continue to travel around Minnesota, and this time we’re learning about all the fascinating historical sites our state has to offer and giving you a book prompt inspired by each site.

We will share six book suggestions to meet that prompt, to get you started on reading new books. You can also take that prompt and find any other book to meet the challenge!

Minnehaha Depot, famous for its intricate “gingerbread” canopy, was an integral part of the first rail line out of Minneapolis. Known as the “Princess” by rail workers of the time, it served both local Minneapolis residents as well as visitors from “out east.” Read a book with a princess.

In our show notes for this episode, we link each book to one of our state’s great independent bookstores: Magers and Quinn in Minneapolis, MN. It gives you a description, so you can get more information about the book to help you make a decision about your reading or recommendations.
