Episode 208: African American fiction

Welcome back to our book group podcast: Reading with Libraries! This week we are discussing African American Fiction.

We discuss different genres of books each week, which is both fun and useful to library people doing Reader’s Advisory work. There are so many book genres out there that it’s tough to be an expert on all of them. So we pick a new genre each week to chat about and hopefully provide you with some insight into what may be an unfamiliar genre!

We want this to be fun – like a standard book group! And beverages are an important part of any book group. As we start each episode, we will be enjoying our beverages; and as you ? the listener ? are also members of this book group, you should also have a beverage!

Our book group is very inclusive; there are no “right” or “wrong” books here! We just like to read and chat about books, and want you to share what you are reading too! All of us will take away at least a title or two that we want to read at the end of our time together!

Episode 207: Dystopian fiction

Welcome to this week’s edition of the book group!

This week our Guest Host is Kelly Kraemer, from College of St. Ben’s and St. John’s University.

These books are the ones that touch people’s lives, and touch the fears they have. When society seems scary around us, reading dystopian fiction increases because people want to see how things can go wrong.  After the 2016 elections, sales of dystopian fiction increased dramatically. Fiction can help us put things into perspective, and hopefully there is a happy ending that we can all aspire to!

Check out all our information on our show notes page. Our beverages, book information, and books we share are all here. Grab a beverage, browse for book ideas, and let’s talk books!

Episode 205: Biography

Thanks to our Guest Host this week: Lydia, from Great River Public Library system!

This week we spend time focusing directly on looking at people, rather than just books. It is always interesting to read a well-done biography, because learning about people’s lives can give us so many ideas for ourselves. They can be inspiring; they can be horrifying. They can help us to improve ourselves because we are excited by what the subject did; they can encourage us to improve our own lives by seeing the terrible things some subjects have created or survived. There is always something to take from a biography, so they are going to be interesting to read!

Episode 204: Travel

Travel is good for us. We see new places, we meet new people, we try new foods ? and in all of it we probably realize how connected we are to everything else. Travel lets you explore and broaden your mind. It lets you fill your brain with good (and bad) memories.

This week we explore some new places, read about adventures, and enjoy dreaming about vacations we might take!

Check out our full information page here, where you can find all our beverages, links to the books we read, and links to the resources we share to help you find even more travel books.

Join our Patreon, and help to support the show! We need your help to keep producing new content each week – and of course, to help keep Lady Grey in treats! (Click on our page to check out our Official Office Dog – she’s adorable!) We want to build a nice community of readers, and you can be part of that.
