Recommended App: Seamus Heaney: Five Fables

seamus_heaneyRecently, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) came out with their 25 Best Apps for Teaching & Learning for 2015. The apps were chosen because they foster innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration.

This week we highlight Seamus Heaney: Five Fables. Remember Aesop’s Fables? This app brings those tales to life! “Students will be able to look at the original language, as well as modern English while at the same time viewing animations of the fables.”

The app is recommended for upper Elementary (3-5) students. It is available on IOS for $11.99. This video gives you a quick introduction to the app:

Your students have ideas right? Help them capture them with this weeks app: Spider Scribe Jr.! A mind mapping and brainstorming tool, Spider Scribe Jr. lets you organize your ideas by connecting notes, images and geographic locations in free-form maps. The best part, the app can be used offline and doesn’t require internet connection.

The app is FREE for iOS devices and recommended for Upper elementary (3-5) students and Up.

Recommended App: Amazing World Atlas

This week week we highlight Amazing World Atlas. Created by Lonely Planet to explore and learn about world geography, Amazing World Atlas includes flag and capital information in interactive games, quizzes, and exploration tools. AASL’s tip: use the app for a more interactive way to do research on world geography, including continents, countries and cities

Recommended App: Think Like Churchill

think_churchillRecently, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) came out with their 25 Best Apps for Teaching & Learning for 2015. The apps were chosen because they foster innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration.

What better historical figure to have students see events through than Winston Churchill. The app lets readers select from six pivotal events from the life of the Winston Churchill. “At the end of each story, readers are asked to weigh options and make decisions based on what they think is the right.” AASL points out that “Think Like Churchill is perfect for role playing and decision making in middle school or high school history classes.”

The app costs $3.99 for iOS devices and recommended for Middle and High School students. Check out the app’s preview video below:

Recommended App: David Wiesner’s Spot

This week we highlight David Wiesner’s Spot.  This app allows users to “zoom closer and closer into the illustrations and discover unseen worlds, which, in turn, beg to be further investigated. They will delight in dust bunnies that hop when touched, welding ladybugs, a family of insects enjoying a winter day, and a host of other unexpected surprises.”

The app is recommended for early Elementary K-2 students.  It is available on IOS for $4.99.  This video gives you a quick introduction to the app:
