Dear Educator, We are in the middle of a coding revolution! Computer science in the classroom plays an important role in preparing students of all ages for success in a wide variety of areas. In an effort to contribute to this movement, the MN Coding in the Classroom Leadership Cohort, an initiative of Code Savvy, is starting its third year and is seeking elementary, middle and high school school educators from across the state to participate.
The purpose of this Cohort is to develop knowledgeable, visionary educators who will help to make Minnesota a world leader in computer science education, and to help all students become creators, not merely users, of new technologies. Cohort participants will explore a variety of coding platforms and resources, gain insights into the IT industry through site visits and guest speakers, and investigate national and international standards for computer science education.
They will then develop, evaluate and share coding activities that integrate with school curricula and meet Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards and National Computer Science Teachers Association K-12 Standards. Additionally, participants will share their knowledge and resources with at least 10 other educators by creating and delivering professional development. This session will look at the ongoing importance of mobile devices and the influence those devices have on access to and usage of various forms of content, whether text or multimedia. As mobile technology is a ubiquitous tool for a global population, its impact on the practices and policies of libraries and content providers should not be underestimated.
“Registration is now open for the sixth annual Lake Superior Libraries Symposium! LSLS17 will be held on June 9, 2017 in Duluth, Minnesota at the University of Minnesota Duluth Kathryn A. Martin Library. Reflecting this year’s conference theme, Beyond Neutral, breakout sessions will invite participants to challenge the traditional stance of libraries as neutral spaces.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Loriene Roy, Professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin, former president of the American Indian Library Association and American Library Association, and recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the American Indian Library Association. The conference also features a lightning round and two social events. For more information and to register, see https://lakesuperiorlibrariessymposium.com/symposia/lsls17/
For an additional registration fee, attendees can participate in a pre-conference workshop, “Libraries Serving Native Communities: Collaboration and Support,” facilitated by Dr. Loriene Roy on Thursday, June 8 from noon-4pm. Find more information about the workshop at https://lakesuperiorlibrariessymposium.com/symposia/lsls17/pre-conference-workshop/“
As with tradition, we are traveling around central Minnesota. This year Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary School will host!
EdcampMidMN is an open, participatory, dynamic and free professional development conference. Edcamp brings together those who understand the complexities and promises of learning – actual teachers, administrators, and educational support personnel. Rather than being lectured to by experts, Edcampers facilitate their own discussions about relevant pedagogy or promising technology, and share with each other effective learning practices.
Many of you are familiar with our recorded Siera webinars. We offer three series of free and fee-based webcasts, with topics applicable to libraries, universities, local government, charities, and small businesses. The rental webcasts are $10.00 for three days of unlimited viewing on one computer, with no limitations on how many people can watch per viewing. We think it’s a good deal.
However, the way the system was set up, if you rented a webcast, you had to view it immediately within the 72-hour window. For the rest of 2017, we are changing that model.
