Oklahoma educators tap into Twitter chats

Twitter_logo_blueWhat happens when educators in a state can be part of a larger conversation about education? From NewsOK.com the benefits seem to only be positive. In an effort to tie together education-related posts, two superintendents started using the #OklaEd hashtag on Twitter. Soon after, during a breakout session at a local EdCamp, the idea of a weekly chat caught on. Now held every Sunday evening, the Twitter chat “has allowed educators to collaborate and share information in real time.” Kimberly Blodgett, a 5th grade Oklahoma teacher, said “it’s great every Sunday evening to watch everyone share their ideas back and forth. It’s inspiring to me. It makes you excited about what you do.” Read the whole article now!

Locally we’ve got Twitter chats of our own! ITEM holds them using the #mnitem hashtag. Their next one is on Tuesday, September 15 at 7pm CST. So login and lurk or jump in and participate!

The Meetup Met Up
The first annual Libraries Serving Youth Meetup was held on April 18, 2015 at the Minnesota Department of Education in Roseville. Nearly fifty enthusiastic school media specialists and public librarians came together to learn about stand-out Minnesota school and public library collaborations, share ideas and network. Attendees overwhelmingly expressed their appreciation for this singular opportunity to mix and mingle with colleagues from both schools and public libraries. While State Library Services will host another Meetup next spring, we encourage you to coordinate a meetup between schools and libraries in your region. Please contact Jennifer Verbrugge at jennifer.verbrugge@state.mn.us or 651-582-8356 to request slides from the presentations or for tips and tricks in planning your own meetup.

Genrefication of your school’s fiction collection

Sports FictionUpdate 4/22/2015: Check out ITEM’s information about the Bookstore Model.

Do you use the Dewey Decimal Classification at your school? Can your kids figure out what “142.780973” means? Would they know where to find the “Sports” books? Using this logic, many schools are wondering if they and their students might be better served using a book-store model, or genres, when it comes to their fiction collection…. but where to begin?

There are many resources on the web but most applicable for CMLE members might be the slides from a presentation at the 2014 ITEM conference by Mary Brimacomb called Genrify Your Fiction Books. In it she talks about getting volunteers, working in Destiny software, and signage. The topic of genrefying even came up at the 2014 ITEM unconference. You can find that discussion here. Looking beyond our region, there is this wonderful blog post about “Genrefying” a High School Library. Another great resource is a series of blog posts by, 2014 Mover and Shaker, Tiffany Whitehead thoroughly discusses the subject. Her 5 part series is an excellent breakdown of the issues involved:
