February is Black History Month! We want to make sure our member libraries have all sorts of book recommendations and resources to celebrate this month and to encourage learning about Black history all year long.
Let’s start with some recommended reading lists:
- PBS Books has this awesome list of books for all ages for Black History Month.
- Explore this list “Ten Essential Black Authors to Read During Black History Month— and Every Month” from English professor Camille T. Dungy
- Take a look at this article from PostBulletin: “7 New Books to Read During Black History Month.”
- This article from Reading Rockets has a ton of children’s book suggestions for Black History Month.
- And Book Riot has this fun article all about bookish hashtags to follow during the month.
Next, explore these resources you can use in your school library or classroom:
- Edutopia has this article that suggests six teaching tools for Black History Month. Some of the these include 6 EdTech Tools for Black History Month, Primary Sources from BlackPast.org, and African American History Month Resources from the Library of Congress.
- The National Education Association has lesson plans, quizzes, and videos for grades K-12 and includes topics like African Americans in Science and Technology and The Illusion of Race.
Finally, last year at CMLE we hosted an African American Read-In event where we were able to explore an awesome variety of African American literature. Read about our event or learn more about African American Read-Ins.
