Spotlight Program: Beginning Street Art

Banksy 28 October installment from "Better Out Than In" New York City residency

I love to see art and art programs in the library – and this one looked really interesting! Check out this report by By Lisa Fipps, Director of Marketing and Community Engagement, Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, Ind.

“Beginning Street Art was an active companion program to Banksy Booked @KHPCL, the theme for a number of active and passive programs to coincide with a six-week exhibit of Banksy’s “Haight Street Rat” street art.

YA author Shannon Lee Alexander’s work-in-progress is about a character from an abusive home in a stagnant, some would even say dying, Appalachian town. She’s done a lot of research about street art for the novel, and it’s now become one of her passions. I asked her if she would lead teens in a workshop to explain graffiti and give participants an opportunity to try the various types of street art.

I assumed only teens would be interested, but quickly realized that adults wanted to know more and try it, too. So I opened up the program to both audiences. The program was informational and skill-building. It also brought generations together. I worked with Shannon to make it a two-fer by asking her to talk about her two published books, and sell and sign them at the event as well….

Just having a Banksy piece helped draw a lot of attention to KHCPL and, therefore, I received a lot of word-of-mouth marketing for Beginning Street Art and all the programs associated with the exhibit.

I emailed the flier to all the art teachers at the five high schools in the county. I met with the Visitor’s Bureau to market Banksy Booked @KHCPL and the passive and active programs associated with it to cities in Indiana and beyond. That marketing led to a listing in the Visit Indiana’s August Festivals & Events newsletter and travelindiana.com, with an audience of at least 50,000. The Visitor’s Bureau also paid for social marketing ads.

I also created paid social media ads. I pay for monthly radio advertising and included information about Beginning Street Art in the month leading up to Banksy Booked @KHCPL. I sent out press releases to all three local newspapers, which published stories about it. Since the Banksy Booked @KHCPL story was picked up by the Associated Press, it further marketed Beginning Street Art.

I worked with graphics to get a sign up near the Banksy that provided the history of the “Haight Street Rat” and explained the various companion active and passive programs, including Beginning Street Art. I included information about Beginning Street Art in our newsletter that is mailed to 40,000 homes in our taxing district. I wrote about it in our enewsletter, which goes out to about 5,000 subscribers. I asked the graphic artist to create fliers for all three locations and our two bookmobiles. ”

What’s up with our geocache travel bugs??

Geocache

A year or so ago, we dropped five travel bugs in geocaches, to see where they would end up. So let’s check in on them now, to see what kind of progress they have made!

  • Library Fan #1: dropped in a cache in Minnesota, and we have no updates
  • Library Visitor: dropped in Minnesota and has done a little traveling, but no updates in a while
  • Libraries Rock: looks like this one is sitting in a cache in the Aitkin Public Library. (If you are in the area – go check on it for us!)
  • Take Me To Your Library: after a short travel time, this one was marked as officially lost by the admins of the website.
  • Library Travel Bug: This one has had a lot of adventures, and is getting a pretty scenic tour of Colorado right now! A nice family has even added the travel bug to a stuffed bear, which does look pretty spiffy.

You can spread library information in all kinds of ways!! Does your library have a geocache? Do you send travel bugs out into the world?? Talk to us if this is something you would like to set up!!

Steampunk Worlds Fair (4629447382)

At CMLE, we so enjoy all our different types of libraries, archives, and other members! Seeing all the work you are doing is so inspiring; and we want to return the favor by helping you to find some of the great programming going on around the profession.

Each week we will share an interesting program we find. It may inspire you to do exactly the same thing; or to try something related; or just to try out some different programming ideas.

Check out this program on steampunk art. And, please, please invite us over if you do this !!! (I’m a steampunk fan!)

Spotlight Program: Healthy, relaxing activities at the library

Food-salad-healthy-vegetables-1 (23959011279)

We are all starting off a shiny new year, and a lot of us are working on some healthy changes. Libraries can do fun things to help people with that! Check out these activities in January at the Hays Public Library:

“Healthful resolutions abound in January, so let the library help you on your journey. At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the adult department is hosting a smoothie making tutorial. There will be samples and recipes for several oh-so-trendy smoothies. Smoothies are a great way to sneak in fruits and vegetables to your diet.

If you have aches and pains or if you just can’t get your feet warm, attend the library’s Crafternoon at 2 p.m. Jan. 13, where we’ll be making DIY heating pads.

In a similar vein, at 6 p.m. Jan. 18, the library is hosting a hot stone massage program. Using hot stones and essential oils, participants will be able to melt away tension and relieve stress. Make sure you plan for a babysitter — the hot stone massage program is for adults only. Finally, if you’re looking to be invigorated, you might try attending the library’s DIY shower bomb program at 6 p.m. Jan. 25. Shower bombs are infused with essential oils and add effervescence to a hot shower. Arrive early. The library only has materials for the first 12 adults who arrive. The programs are free to attend.

If you’re looking for an excuse to leave the house, the library has several upcoming free programs. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, there will be a movie trivia night. If you are a cinephile who really knows your stuff, then this program is for you. There will be prizes for the top three finishers.

Then, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, the library is hosting an after-hours movie night featuring the 2017 adaptation of IT, based on the novel by Stephen King. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free. Participants must be 18 to attend the movie night.

There will be an adult-only bingo at the library at 4 p.m. Jan. 18. There are prizes for winners.

Kansas Day is Jan. 29, and the Kansas Room, located in the library’s basement, is hosting an open house. Marissa Lamer has been Kansas Room librarian for the last two years and is working on some exciting changes — from physical layout to checkouts to overhead scanners. Beginning at 6 p.m., there will be tours of the Kansas Room every half hour. There also will be Kansas-themed treats and a festive atmosphere to celebrate Kansas’ birthday. Door prizes will be given away. The grand door prize will be two tickets to see Lee Brice in Salina on Feb. 10, along with dinner for two at Martinelli’s. If you want a chance to win, make sure you drop by the Kansas Room on the evening of Jan. 29.
