Recap of Snippets and Sneak Peeks Event

Snippets and Sneak Peaks: Winter EditionWe had a wonderful time at our Snippets & Sneak Peeks: Winter Edition event on Tuesday, January 12th. Attendees braved the sub-zero windchill to listen to the staff from Barnes & Noble in St. Cloud share their favorite children’s and young adult books. Three authors also shared about their books: Ryan Jacobson, Aimee Bissonette, and Kristin D. Van Risseghem. Librarians and media center staff heard snippets from 57 books – some of which were just officially published that day!  We had tasty treats, coffee, and warm conversation to make this a fantastic event for all who attended. Thank you to ITEM for partnering with us on this and also to the Barnes & Noble staff: Jennie, Andy, Katie, and Amy for all the work you did.

Tip: Check with your employer to see if they have already set up a B&N Institutional Account or a B&N Educator Discount Card. No? During this event, educators from Pre-K through grade 12 can sign up for a free Educator Card and receive 25% off their personal and school purchases. Why? Our event falls within Educator Appreciation Week!

Did you know that B & N does book fairs? This may be especially helpful to area high schools.

Note: Some of you may already have B & N Educator Discount Cards and may receive a B & N  invitation to another similar event at 6 pm. Because B & N usually hosts its own separate “educator” event during  Educator Appreciation Week, the authors mentioned above for our book talk event will stay for slightly longer presentations at a B & N event from 6:00 – 7:00 pm which will include an audience beyond library personnel. This event will include the same book talks covered in our earlier event.

Apollo’s Book Talk Program

This shiny little success story was written by Susan Hoffman, media specialist at Apollo High School. Susan is also part of the CMLE Outreach Panel, which meets monthly in a Google Hangout to talk shop. During a recent hangout, this little programming gem sparked the interest of others!

Drop ‘N Talk

This book talk experience is designed to quickly connect students with books. Here is what I did: I sent an e-mail to the teachers in my school asking if I could “Drop ‘N Talk” for five minutes at the beginning of their classroom hour. I set up a schedule and got assurance from each participating teacher that the agreed upon date and time would work.

Then, I just showed up with three to five works of fiction that, if possible, correlated with the subject matter of the course, or the general reading level of the class. By the time the teacher had attendance taken, my tempting talk was finished.

I created a “Drop ‘N Talk” display in the library. That way, students could easily spot the books I had introduced and check them out.“Drop ‘N Talks” were performed during “I Love to Read Month,” but they would also be fun to do during National Library Week, Banned Book Week, Teen Literature Day, or during any other celebration of reading.
