Public libraries are invited to apply for NASA@ My Library, a STEM education initiative that will increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for library patrons throughout the nation, including geographic areas and populations currently underserved in STEM education.

The project is offered by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI) in partnership with the ALA Public Programs Office, the Pacific Science Center, Cornerstones of Science, and the Education Development Center. Support comes from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

Seventy-five U.S. public libraries will be selected through a competitive application process to become NASA@ My Library Partners and participate in the 18-month project (Phase 1), with the opportunity to extend for an additional two-year period (Phase 2).

Experience the Creativity of Minnesota’s Kid Filmmakers with Kelly Barnhill

We are thrilled to announce that 123 films were submitted by Minnesota students to this year’s 90-Second Newbery Film Festival. 90-Second Newbery founder and middle grade author James Kennedy has chosen his favorite entries from Minnesota, and is set to show them at the third annual screening on Saturday, February 25, in Pohlad Hall, 3-4:30 p.m., at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central. Newbery Award-winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon, Kelly Barnhill, will co-host the event with Mr. Kennedy. On-site book sales are provided by Addendum Books. Make your free reservation to attend the screening today. While it helps us to plan, a reservation does not guarantee a seat. In case of large turnout, we will live-stream the event in an overflow room adjacent to Pohlad Hall. Help us promote the event by downloading and sharing the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival poster. Please contact Jen Verbrugge (651-582-8356) for more information.

Your friendly librarian – here to save the day!

We all know that library people are awesome – working to serve our communities and to help our patrons! But this story, about a school librarian who went above and beyond to help a patron to clear her name and to escape grounding by her mom, is an inspiration to us all!

Have you had a good patron experience lately? Tell us about it in the comments, or send it to us at CMLE Headquarters – we love to hear about our members and their successes!!

From Huffington Post:

“On Tuesday, a New York-based school librarian named Jennifer Iacopelli put on her detective cap after a crying student approached her for help.

According to a series of increasingly Sherlock-esque tweets, she is apparently a master of both the Dewey Decimal System and sleuthing.

…The student insisted that the inappropriate additions to her paper, which she’d been working on using Google Docs, were not her own. Intrigued by the alleged hacking, Iacopelli went on the hunt to figure out how the paper ended up in this condition.”

YALSA 2017 Selected Book Lists: Don’t Forget to Check Them Out!

CMLE members – pay attention to the Young Adult Library Services Association, and all their resources to help you in your work! They provide awards for more than 4,000 books, audiobooks, and movies. “This database provides access to all of YALSA‘s annual selected book and media lists, awards, and honorees. These resources are developed by library staff and educators to support the collection development and readers’ advisory work of library staff.

While these books have been selected for teens from 12 to 18 years of age, the award-winning titles and the titles on YALSA’s selected lists span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families.”
