Minnesota Libraries are in need of radical support in 2017

“Dear Minnesota Library Supporter,

This year the annual Minnesota Library Association conference will be held in Rochester, MN on October 5-6. We expect the conference to be attended by hundreds of librarians, trustees, exhibitors, and Friends of Libraries from across Minnesota.

This year’s conference theme is Radical Librarianship – the power of libraries to provide access to the truth, strengthen our community voices, create opportunity for exploration and innovation, and assist our patrons to build a better future.

The Minnesota Library Foundation’s mission is “to benefit the community by raising and distributing funds to enhance the services and increase public awareness of Minnesota libraries.” Some of the ways that the money raised by the Silent Auction has been given back to the greater Minnesota library community have included:

  • helping libraries recover from disasters
  • sponsoring the MILE Leadership Institute
  • supporting the Minnesota Book Awards
  • providing small grants to libraries across the state

“Registration is now open for the sixth annual Lake Superior Libraries Symposium! LSLS17 will be held on June 9, 2017 in Duluth, Minnesota at the University of Minnesota Duluth Kathryn A. Martin Library. Reflecting this year’s conference theme, Beyond Neutral, breakout sessions will invite participants to challenge the traditional stance of libraries as neutral spaces.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Loriene Roy, Professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin, former president of the American Indian Library Association and American Library Association, and recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the American Indian Library Association. The conference also features a lightning round and two social events. For more information and to register, see https://lakesuperiorlibrariessymposium.com/symposia/lsls17/

For an additional registration fee, attendees can participate in a pre-conference workshop, “Libraries Serving Native Communities: Collaboration and Support,” facilitated by Dr. Loriene Roy on Thursday, June 8 from noon-4pm. Find more information about the workshop at https://lakesuperiorlibrariessymposium.com/symposia/lsls17/pre-conference-workshop/

Share your stories of resilience with ACRL!

The 2018 ACRL President’s Program Planning Committee invites your participation

At ALA Annual 2018 in New Orleans the ACRL President’s Program will explore the idea of resilience in (hopefully) all of its complexity.  As a first step in our planning process, we want to hear your stories about resilience and how you have experienced it in your workplace. We are not looking for a specific type of story or any particular focus.  Please share as much or as little as you like through our form.

We would love to hear your stories as soon as possible!  Our preferred date to receive them is by Monday, June 19, 2017, but the form will remain open for some time after ALA Annual 2017.

The planning committee will use the stories we gather to identify the scope and themes for the program. We will also share them with the speakers to help them as they prepare.  To protect your anonymity, we will redact names and institutions from the stories before sharing them with speakers; and we will not share these stories in any form publicly.

Thank you again for sharing your time and experiences.  If you have questions, additional comments to share, or ideas for good speakers, please contact Jeanne Davidson at jeanne.davidson@sdstate.edu
