23 Mobile Things Spotlight – Thing 18 Education

icon_23_100px1The CMLE office will be shining a spotlight on some of the 23 Mobile Thing posts that deserve to be noticed. This week’s focus is on Education, Thing 18.

Elk River High School Media Assistant Zoma Olson on her “The Adventures of SZSRocks” blog expertly showcased the fun that can be had with the coLAR Mix app. Just look at the picture and see what amazing things the app can do.

Thing 18 - colAR 8Zoma, looked a few other apps in her post and found a possible use for the Today’s Document app. “We have a white board at the entrance to the ERHS Media Center,” she said, “and we try to change the greeting every day.  The Today’s Document app may be a good source for daily reading prompts to put on the board.”

23 Mobile Things Spotlight – Thing 13 Presentations

icon_23_100px1The CMLE office will be shining a spotlight on some of the 23 Mobile Thing posts that deserve to be noticed. This week’s focus is on Presentations, Thing 13.

Media Specialist Holly Pringle on her aptly titled “How to Become an iPad Ninja in 23 Easy Steps” blog found some great presentation apps. Besides her school’s “staple” apps, Educreations and Haiku Deck, she thought the Flowboard app might have a place on student’s iPads too. “Using, editing, working Flowboard was easy. Sharing was simple…..just a WAY more intuitive app, which is what my students (and teachers) need. I think this would be a nice addition to our iPads…..kids could decide if this fits them or if Haiku Deck is a better option.”

Progress on 23 Mobile Things…We Have Finishers!

We hope you are still enjoying the online learning provided by the 23 Mobile Things Program, and we wanted to take a quick minute to publicly congratulate some of our “high flyers” in the program. If you are off to a slow start, take heart, every bit of learning is valuable and is making you a better professional, better equipped to help your end users when they have questions about their devices or apps. But please don’t think I am letting you off easy, set your sites on completing at least the next five, request your badge, then see how great you feel. We guarantee, you will get hooked and want to continue!

Yes folks, we have seven people in the CMLE region who have finished the program so far; others have until June 15, 2014. Some people are doing the program loud and proud, with a robust blog profile and picture,  others are flying under the radar, going incognito!

A huge congratulations to the following people:

  • Blog name: 23 in ’14: Carolyn Avaire, East Central Regional Library (ECRL)
  • Blog name: 23 Mobile Things: Duane Hawkinson, Monticello Public School Media Centers
  • Blog name: 23 New Ways of Looking at a Library: Katherine Morrow, ECRL
  • Blog name: The Adventures of SZSRocks: Zoma Olson, Elk River High School Media Staff
  • Blog name: How to Become an iPad Ninja in 23 Easy Steps: Holly Pringle, Becker School Media Specialist
  • Blog name: Library Connections: Sarah Hawkins, ECRL
  • Blog name: Sharvermobile: Great River Regional Library (GRRL)

We have an additional seven people who are sporting badges for completing either 5 or 10 of the Things. Well done! Keep going, you are doing great, and we will recognize you at the Finish Line too! I see many more blogs where people have not requested badges. Please do so, as it helps everyone  gauge other participants progress in the program. Tip:  If you are struggling on Thing 11, look for the people with a badge for 10 things, and check their blogs for hints or tips that might help you with that Thing. Better than randomly clicking on all blogs, right?

Did you expect to see your name on the list, but it is not there? Maybe you are not up to date on your badges?!

Badges! Each time you complete a group of five things (in any order), send an email to minn23@gmail.com with your name, region and blog name and we will add a badge next to your blog on the blog list by region. If you have another place to display a badge, let us know that, too, and we will send you the badge to display. You can see the badges in the right sidebar of the main program page, and you can review all of the CMLE blogs at http://23mobilethingsmn.org/cmle/. Good luck, enjoy the learning and sharing and see you online!

Prizes: CMLE participants who complete 23 Things will receive a completion prize and have their name entered in a special prize drawing from CMLE. You had to register your blog as described in Thing 1 and you need to complete all Things by June 15, 2014 to be eligible. Only registered Minnesota participants are eligible for prizes.  Keep on blogging, see you online!

23 Mobile Things Spotlight – Thing 7 Content Saving and Sharing

icon_23_100px1The CMLE office will be shining a spotlight on some of the 23 Mobile Thing posts that deserve to be noticed. This week’s focus is on Content Saving and Sharing, Thing 7 in the program.

The first spotlight is on the “Husker Tech” blog written by Debbie, a K-12 Media Specialist at the Holdingford Public Schools. In her post about content saving and sharing, she looked at the Pinterest, EduClipper, and Blendspace apps. She commented that EduClipper is “…created with teachers and students in mind… [and] works much the same way as Pinterest as far as creating boards and clipping things to add to your board.” She liked the fact that it was educational items and thought “teachers and/or students can easily create digital collection of resources around a particular unit of study.”

In Andrea’s “Assorted Librarian” blog, she used Pinterest “to find ideas for my branch’s summer reading program–and hit the jackpot.” Andrea is a public librarian working in rural Minnesota and wrote Pinterest would be a great resource for ideas for virtual displays, book lists, local history, or other special interests.

23 Mobile Things Spotlight – Thing 14 Videos

icon_23_100px1In a recent post, we saw that the CMLE region has 86 people participating in the 23 Mobile Things program. With that many people doing 23 things it would make for a staggering 1978 blog posts to read! In an effort to reduce some of the reading, the CMLE office will be shining a spotlight on some of the posts that deserve to be noticed.

This week’s focus is on Videos, Thing 14 in the program.

Two CMLE region participants found some great library uses for their video apps. Media Specialist Duane Hawkinson on his aptly named “23 Mobile Things” blog, looked at a few video apps. He finally found that “[Magisto] creates some very interesting effects with its stylized editing and music–which should appeal to students”. His videos are a fun example of what’s possible when creating a book promotion video using Magisto.

On her “Library Connections” blog, public librarian Sarah Hawkins found a video app not featured on the 23 Mobile Thing website. In her Thing 14 blog post, she talks about her struggles creating a Summer Reading Program (SRP) video. Luckily, she found the Samsung Video Editor (Android devices only) and concluded, “I definitely will be using Samsung Video Editor for my SRP video this year!”
