At CMLE we’ve talked about reluctant readers before. We’ve even held a Reluctant Reader Event! Knowing that you can’t ever have too many book titles, here is a list from BookRiot for those reluctant readers ages 12 to 13. The list has 61 books so there’s something for everyone.

Using technology to connect students to books

P1030793More often than not, we think of technology as the antagonist to our hero – books.  But it doesn’t have to be that way!  There are online resources that can encourage users to get offline & in front of a book.  In fact, Sarah Muthler of Edudemic has found 10.  Some of these sites are better-known than others.  Check out her Ten Websites to Help Students Connect with Books, which covers sites from the ALA’s banned and challenged books to Goodreads.  See which websites work best for your students, or for yourself!

Imagination Library prepares to donate its 1 millionth book!

Imagination LibraryImagination Library is about to donate its 1 millionth book!  The program, founded by country singer Dolly Parton, “distributes age-appropriate books to kids from birth to age 5 to promote literacy,” Stephanie Dickrell of the St. Cloud Times reports.  The United Way of Central Minnesota has been taking part in Imagination Library for 10 years.  The program has no income requirements and is free for any child.  The books are delivered in the mail, along with reading tips for parents, and a child enrolled at birth will receive 60 books by the time they start kindergarten.  Tony Terwey, the St. Joseph Postmaster, estimated that the St. Joseph post office sees about 200 book packages each month – and each of his 4 children have participated in the program.  Click here if you’re interested in registering your child with the Imagination Library.
