Apply for the 2018 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture

Writer and Poet Naomi Shihab Nye will deliver the
2018 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture.

Photo of Naomi Shihab Nye“A wise and lyrical observer, Naomi Shihab Nye consistently draws on her heritage and writing to attest to our shared humanity,” stated 2018 Arbuthnot Committee Chair Elizabeth Ramsey Bird.

The daughter of a Palestinian father and an American mother, Naomi Shihab Nye grew up in St. Louis, Jerusalem, and San Antonio, Texas. The author and/or editor of more than 30 books for adults and children, her latest for young people, “The Turtle of Oman,” was chosen as a 2015 Notable Children’s Book by the ALA. She has received four Pushcart Prizes, was a National Book Award finalist, and has been named a Guggenheim Fellow, amongst her many honors.

The lecturer, announced annually during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits, may be an author, illustrator, editor, critic, librarian, historian or teacher of children’s literature, of any country, who shall prepare a paper considered to be a significant contribution to the field of children’s literature.  This paper is delivered as a lecture each April or May, and is subsequently published in “Children and Libraries,” the journal of ALSC.  Once the name is made public, institutions wishing to host the lecture may apply.  A library school, department of education in a college or university, or a public library system may be considered. What could your anime/manga group do??

A library person was asking for information on activities her anime/manga group might do. There were several suggestions, and I am passing them on here, because several of you have these groups or have talked about starting them. This can be a great way to connect to young adults in your community!

Have you done other good things in your library? Share them in the comments!

  • DIY Bento Boxes or candy sushi
  • Perler Beads
  • Paper beads made from manga sheets
  • Button making/bottle cap magnets
  • Sushi candles
  • Anime/manga inspired glass etching
  • Anime/manga inspired t-shirt stenciling
  • A lot of things with Mod Podge and manga or comic books you plan on donating like bracelets or picture frames

Q&A: Makerspaces, Media Labs and Other Forums for Content Creation in Libraries

Statement of Purpose: This Q&A can be used as a guide by libraries as they create policies for makerspaces or other content creation forums within their facilities. It is not intended to be a template for such policies but rather a source for answers to questions that are likely to be asked as libraries formulate content creation policies. This document should not be construed as legal advice but may serve as insight as to when a library may need to seek legal advice.

Is a library really an appropriate space for hands on creative activities? 

Historically libraries have often included in their functions the creation, as well as the preservation and dissemination, of content in many different formats.  Libraries have supported and encouraged scholars, writers, inventors, artists and artisans, and provided study rooms, carrels, meeting, exhibit and performance spaces, as well as tools and equipment for individual and group use.

Providing 3D printers and other tools and technology in makerspaces, tech labs, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) labs, media labs, exhibit and performance venues, as well as other physical and virtual spaces for creative endeavors, is only the latest manifestation of the library’s natural role in encouraging and facilitating the creativity and ingenuity of its community of users. Coming Up: National Library Week

Just a quick reminder that next week is National Library Week!

At CMLE Headquarters, we support all our 300+ libraries, and want to be sure you guys are ready to tell the world how wonderful you are!! Call someone (legislator, stakeholder, potential fan) and tell them about your work. Take some photos and share them on social media, or send them to us and we can share them. Video an interview with a patron who gushes about your great things – or interview yourself on video gushing about your great things!

Libraries are just wonderful, and this is your chance to bask in that!

“Libraries Transform” is the theme for National Library Week in 2017.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

Celebrations during National Library Week include:

  • Monday, April 10: State of America’s Libraries Report released, including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2016.
  • Tuesday, April 11: National Library Workers Day, a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.
  • Wednesday, April 12: National Bookmobile Day, a day to recognize the contributions of our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities.
  • Thursday, April 13, has just been designated Take Action for Libraries Day.  Read the press release. Details will be posted here as soon as they’re available.
