Continuing our series of visits to CMLE area libraries, I was able to visit and chat with the staff at the Cambridge Public Library, as well as the East Central Regional Library Headquarters. Thanks to Barb Misselt, Sarah Hawkins, and Carla Lydon for taking time out to show me around libraries all day, and to give me a lot of good info on libraries in their area!
Although we were all sad to hear about the defeat of the Cambridge ballot measure for a much-needed new building (for more information on this and 70+ initiatives voted on across the country, check here), the library itself is still providing some great resources to its community! This sign, displayed in the community room, is a great example of the work they are doing to reach out to patrons and to serve their community! Libraries are in the business of providing information and entertainment; and we need to always search for that “yes” to give to our community.
Scout & Morgan Books in Cambridge, MN became a Top 10 finalist for the 2015 Independent We Stand -Independent Small Business of the Year Award in December. They were the only Minnesota business to become a finalist with 22,000 votes cast for 315 nominees during the nominations phase. This is exciting news in itself, but possibly the best part of this story is that Judith Kissner, the owner of Scout & Morgan had pledged to donate all of the prize money – $5000 to the Cambridge Public Library to help build their new building! Judith is currently on the task force to build the new Cambridge Public Library. According to Judith, “Public libraries have always been important to me and are an important part of any democracy. They truly are the university of the people.” Scout & Morgan is a locally-owned, independent bookstore that stocks over 25,000 used, new and out-of-print books and has been serving the East Central Minnesota region since 2002.
We at CMLE have learned that Debbie Disher is retiring from the Holdingford Schools. Over the years Debbie has been a rock star participant in our region. She often offered a helping hand when we sought programming feedback or stepped up when we needed an informal presenter too! We wish Debbie only the best in this exciting new journey.
Welcome to Debbies replacements: Audrey Thornborrow (Technology Integrationist, .8) and Kathryn Young (Reading Specialist, .4).
We’ve also learned that the Cambridge-Isanti Schools District is searching for a Technician/Network Engineer. The posting open until it is filled. Click here to view a PDF job description.
