Updates from State Library Services

Thanks for Meeting Up!

The third Libraries Serving Youth Meetup was held on April 22 at the St. Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN). Sixteen enthusiastic school media specialists and public librarians came together to learn about the Saint Paul Public Library/SPNN Createch partnership, discuss makerspaces, share ideas, and network. Attendees left the Meetup energized to try more maker activities with tweens and teens.

Following the Meetup, ten librarians attended a stop-motion animation workshop presented by SPNN. Participants learned a lot, had a fabulous time, and created three very brief films during the course of the two-hour workshop. Participants used HUE cameras and software to make the films, and they proved to be both easy to use and reasonably priced. If stop-motion animation workshops are in your library’s future (perhaps to encourage your kids to create 90-Second Newbery Film Festival submissions, for example), HUE might be worth checking into.

Please contact Jen Verbrugge (651-582-8356) to request slides from the Createch presentation or for tips and tricks in planning your own regional meetup.

Next week: Visit Buffalo High School Library with CMLE!

Attention CMLE members and library fans: we are approaching the date for our next CMLE Group Library Visit!

The new date for this Group Visit is Tuesday, May 9th at 2pm.

We are working on visiting all types of libraries, as we are a multitype system. We have much more in common in services and programs and materials, than the small differences in the focus of our different libraries.

On Tuesday, May 9th at 2:00pm we will be visiting the library at Buffalo High School. We are so excited to be able to take our members to another one of our system’s great libraries! Last month, Mary was able to tour this library and enjoyed seeing their colorful displays, fun programming, and the rest of the exciting work happening at this high school library.

Will you join us? Let us know:

Are joining us for our Buffalo High School visit?(required)

Would you like to go out afterward for snacking and talking?

The table of contents is below.  As you are reading, also know that we are looking for editors to join the Code4Lib Journal Editorial Committee.  What does it mean to join the editorial committee?  Read more about our process and structure (http://journal.code4lib.org/process-and-structure) and/or ask one of the current members of the editorial committee (http://journal.code4lib.org/editorial-committee).  Interested?  Send a letter to journal@code4lib.org and address these two questions:
  1) What is your vision for the Code4Lib Journal? Why are you interested in it?
  2) How can you contribute to the Code4Lib Journal, i.e. what do you have to offer?
In the meantime, enjoy issue 36!

Join Us: Postcard Party in the Park!

Clemens Gardens

Are you ready for spring and beautiful flowers?

Do you love talking about libraries?

Us too!!

We are hosting a Postcard Party in the Park, and you are invited! (You, your family, friends, neighbors, polite strangers you met on the street – it’s a very inclusive invitation!)

CMLE HQ will provide postcards and addresses; you can write out quick notes to your stakeholders to tell them about libraries; and we will mail them. Quick and easy advocacy in action!

Thursday,  May 18 from 11:00 to 1:00 we will be sitting at tables behind the Gift Shop at the Munsinger Clemens Gardens. Bring your lunch; we will provide snacks, postcards, pens, and addresses for your legislators. Beverages are available for purchase at the Gift Shop, and water fountains are nearby.

After our poll on the best day for this event, we have added a second time. We will also be there from 4:30 to 6:30 that afternoon. Stop by on your way home from work, or bring a sack dinner and enjoy the beautiful gardens, and the river! Snacks and postcards will again be available to everyone who attends. First up is our flagship prize, the Evy Nordley Award for Best Project.
