Episode 10-11: A modern retelling of a classic

This season we are exploring all new ideas for books and book suggestions, so you can expand your reading horizons, and share more information with your library community. We are looking at prompts from the 2023 PopSugar reading challenge this season. You can read along with their challenge, linked in our show notes, or just enjoy some different books. 

This is such a fun week – retelling a classic story with a modern twist! Did you read a book in high school that was maybe okay – but you want to read a better version? Do you have a favorite book from a long time ago – and reading a current version would be fun? Or, have you always wanted to try a specific book – but never got around to reading it, and maybe a current version would be more fun? This is your week!

Beverages:

This is, of course, a book group. And every book group needs to have beverages, so you really get the feel for your reading! 

This week, we took our beverage recipes from the article 30 Classic Cocktails Every Home Bartender Should Know. You can try one of the drinks we are enjoying today, or find something else to enjoy.

Brown Sugar Old Fashioned

A little brown sugar makes this classic cocktail extra warm and cozy, adding a hint of caramel, which makes this drink feel anything but old fashioned. It’s the only way we like to make it now! 

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp.
     packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp.
     water
  • 2
     dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 oz.
     bourbon
  • Ice
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish

Directions

  1. Step 1 Add sugar, water, and bitters to glass. Muddle until sugar is dissolved. Add bourbon and ice and stir to combine. 
  2. Step 2 Garnish with an orange peel and cinnamon stick.

Moscow Mule

Aside from tradition, the copper mugs offer a scientific benefit too: The copper gives chilled drinks an extra-cool sensation. And you just might feel pretty cool yourself. 

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • 2 oz.
     vodka
  • 1 oz.
     fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz.
     (12-oz.) can ginger beer
  • Fresh mint, for garnish
  • Lime wedges, for garnish

Directions

  1. Step 1: Fill two copper mugs with ice. Pour 1 ounce vodka and 1/2 ounce lime juice over ice in each mug. Pour ginger beer into each cup until mostly full. Stir. 
  2. Step 2: Garnish with mint and lime wedge to serve.

Genre Discussion:

There are all those stories that are classics for a reason. Many of us know them, we’ve heard the stories, we’ve even seen the movie adaptation. It’s possible that you actually did read the book – but a lot of classic books tend to be the ones that people just say they read, or read the first couple of chapters, or you were supposed to read it in high school but never quite finished it.

A modern retelling of these stories can be your ticket to understanding the story, especially one that everyone else knows and you wish you knew too! Grab a copy of the modern story, and maybe you will enjoy it even more than the original one! Let’s dive in to the updated stories, and see what kind of adventures we can find.

Frankenstein in Baghdad, by Ahmed Saadawi

Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors: A Novel (The Rajes Series #1), by Sonali Dev

Great, by Sara Benincasa

If I’m Being Honest, by Emily Wibberley, Austin Siegemund-Broka

Cameron Bright’s reputation can be summed up in one word: b*tch. It’s no surprise she’s queen bee at her private L.A. high school–she’s beautiful, talented, and notorious for her brutal honesty. But when she slips up in front of her crush, Andrew, any affection he may have had for her quickly fades. To win him over, Cameron resolves to “tame” herself, much like Shakespeare’s infamous shrew, Katherine. If she makes amends with everyone she’s ever wronged, Andrew will have to take notice. Within These Wicked Walls, by Lauren Blackwood

What the heart desires, the house destroys…
