Are you looking to escape the winter weather and gather with like-minded professionals, friends or book enthusiasts? You should consider attending the 21st annual Hubbs Children’s Literature Conference. The University of St. Thomas is hosting this event on Saturday, February 23, 2013; from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m..  The conference cost is $60 per person and $20 per student. You can register in advance or at the door the same day. Topics for the day will include; Diversity in Children’s Books, Enhancing Understanding of Literature among Tweens, How a Picture Book is Developed, and more….

ALA Video – E-books and Digital Content

 

ALAIn this American Library Association (ALA) video, you will hear a special message from ALA President, Maureen Sullivan. She  reinforces how libraries need to be at the forefront of issues around e-books and the digital frontier. She also mentions tools that are currently available and others that are in development. Lastly, she urges librarians to support self-publishing, and help our communities in their self publishing endeavors. Check out the e-content page on the ALA magazine site, where you will find the video too! Sullivan also mentions the availability of the ebook toolkit, which is available at http://www.ala.org/transforminglibraries/ebooktoolkit.

E-Books and K-12 School Media Event Summary

Thanks to everyone who attended the E-Books and K-12 School Media event at RJ’s American Grill and Bar on Tuesday, January 8! Patricia and I were quite happy with the turn-out (20 participants!) and were glad to touch base with so many of you again.

The event kicked off around 3:30, with a brief welcome and introduction to the topic and the event from Patricia. Soon after, we launched Sue Polanka’s webinar recording. Polanka is a Head of Reference and Instruction at Wright State University and is the author of the No Shelf Required blog. Polanka shared some broad information about e-books, e-book readers, e-book lending, e-book publishing, and trends to be aware of. She is a big picture thinker, and provided a thorough overview for the topic of e-books.e-book

After Polanka’s video, we conversed for about 30 minutes on a variety of topics related to e-books and K-12 media. The evaluations from the event indicate that attendees appreciated the opportunity to discuss e-books with others from around the region. And, that there was value in seeing where others are “at” with e-books at their media centers. Next, we took a break, allowing the opportunity for attendees to grab some pizza – yum!

The last video presentation was from Chad Mairn. Chad Mairn is the Information Services Librarian and Adjunct Professor at St. Petersburg College & Chief Technology Officer at Novare Library Services. Mairn was humorous and energizing, and talked about tips and tricks for library staff to help their patrons use their e-reading devices to their full potential. Specific focus areas included: dedicated and non-dedicated e-readers, new and innovative e-reading devices and software, current and upcoming e-formats, Digital Rights Management, privacy issues, and emerging technologies impacting reading in a digital age.

Attendees indicated that as a result of attending this event, they hope to:

  • share what they’ve learned about e-books with other media specialists in their district
  • publicize & market their current e-book collection
  • engage in broad discussions within their district about e-books
  • look into links and websites shared by the presenters
  • investigate e-book publishers/providers

Recently, CMLE staff participated in the virtual SEFLIN eBook conference called eBooks: Benefits, Challenges, and the Future, and paid for group access to the recordings of the five national presenters. We selected the messages of national e-book experts, Sue Polanka and Chad Mairn, as being of most interest to you for this first event. Besides listening to their best thinking on e-books, we would like to offer this opportunity to network informally and discuss local e-book developments and ideas too. Join Chad Mairn as he offers tips and tricks for library staff to help their patrons use their e-reading devices to their full potential. Kansas State Library Launches Facebook Campaign

Have you seen posts on Facebook telling you which books are either unavailable as library ebooks, or how they are being priced for libraries? I love this smart social media campaign to make the library and ebook challenge real and understandable to the end user! Haven’t seen it? Read on…

The Kansas State Library has launched a social media campaign against what it says are unfair practices to keep bestselling electronic books out of the hands of libraries and their patrons.
