There's a Tech Tool for That!

Recently, Charlie Wierzbicki posted an excellent compilation of tech tools for schools. CMLE thought it might be worth sharing.

Did she miss some? What tools have been working at your schools?

23 Mobile Things Spotlight – Thing 18 Education

icon_23_100px1The CMLE office will be shining a spotlight on some of the 23 Mobile Thing posts that deserve to be noticed. This week’s focus is on Education, Thing 18.

Elk River High School Media Assistant Zoma Olson on her “The Adventures of SZSRocks” blog expertly showcased the fun that can be had with the coLAR Mix app. Just look at the picture and see what amazing things the app can do.

Thing 18 - colAR 8Zoma, looked a few other apps in her post and found a possible use for the Today’s Document app. “We have a white board at the entrance to the ERHS Media Center,” she said, “and we try to change the greeting every day.  The Today’s Document app may be a good source for daily reading prompts to put on the board.”

For other great education ideas, or for any of the things, check out the other CMLE participant’s blogs from this page: http://23mobilethingsmn.org/cmle/

For those that are in the program, we encourage you to continue blogging, tweeting, and posting about your experiences. If you’re struggling for motivation, feel free to skip around. Find that mobile thing that motivates you. Remember the end date to complete all 23 Mobile Things is June 15th. If learning more about mobile devices isn’t enough, we remind you that registered Minnesota participants are eligible for prizes! Keep up the great work and make sure to collect your badges.

Handy Guide to Badges in Education

badgesAt the MEMO March Conference last Saturday, there was interest and discussion about using badges in education. It came up in several topical areas including gamification, digital citizenship, iPad Ninja initiatives, book clubs….etc. Therefore, it seemed entirely possible that our friends at Edudemic had something to say about it, and sure enough, they have developed a Teacher’s Guide to Badges in Education. Don’t do badges in the media center? That is ok, but don’t forget your role in offering helpful resources to teachers who are trying to put together a badging program!

This blog post includes video and online tools to implement a badge program. Are you ahead of the curve?  Please share the details in comments or if your explanation is too long for that space, send your story to cmle@stcloudstate.edu to tell us all about your badge program!

It is easy to see how ed tech trends cut across all types of libraries. As K-12 students experience more tech integration in their classrooms, it affects how they approach learning, and flavors the experience they expect at the public library and upon entering college too. Some of our medical librarians feel the increased expectations too for digital learning objects and more integrated information sources. The short list of seven ed tech trends shared by iLibrarian recently are listed below, but don’t stop there, see her blog post which includes  infographics and more information on all of these trends.

  1. 3 D Printing
  2. MOOCs
  3. Big Data
  4. Digital Textbooks
  5. Gamification
  6. The Flipped Classroom
  7. Mobile Learning

ROSEVILLE – Today, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) announced that 48 schools are being designated as Celebration Schools. This year, 166 schools were eligible and applied for the honor.

“I want to congratulate these schools for this incredible accomplishment,” said Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. “Minnesotans should be proud of the work going on in our schools. I look forward to continue learning about their successful efforts to ensure all students succeed and share that work with other schools across the state.”

The Celebration school designation is part of Minnesota’s federal accountability system that replaces No Child Left Behind. Under Minnesota’s program, schools are assigned a Multiple Measurement Rating (MMR) based on students’ proficiency and growth, as well as a school’s progress towards reducing achievement gaps and increasing graduation rates. The state’s Title I schools—those serving racially and ethnically diverse student populations with high levels of poverty—qualify for designations if they are top performers.

Celebration-eligible schools are the 25 percent of schools directly below those designated as Reward schools (the top 15 percent of Title I schools). These schools are then able to apply for Celebration status by documenting what efforts they are using to increase student achievement. MDE selects schools based on their ability to effectively document best practices that have led to student success to receive the Celebration school recognition. Celebration-eligible schools are identified annually.

The schools chosen as Celebration schools this year are:
