Join us for VR Training in November

Come learn how to have this much fun with VR at your school!

Maybe you’ve heard the news CMLE has VR kits to loan FOR FREE to our school library members!

Apply here!

Come to our training event on Tuesday, Nov. 5th and learn how to use the headset devices!

Training will be held from 9-3 at our location: 570 1st St. SE St. Cloud MN 56304. We are inside the cmERDC building and have a large classroom to use.

We’ll have two sessions but feel free to stay for both of them in order to really get a feel for using the headsets. The first session will be from 9am-12pm and the second from 1pm-3pm. CMLE will provide lunch from 12-1pm. (And if you’re here in the morning and have a book you’re reading that you’d like to tell us about, we will happily record a quick Book Bites podcast episode with you!)

If you can’t make it to the training, you can definitely still reserve the headsets for use at your school (provided you are a CMLE member school library) and you should still Apply Here!

At this training session, you will learn how to operate the devices, find lessons that line up with your curriculum, send the VR/AR content to the devices, and use the headsets effectively in your library, media center, or classroom.

Visit our page to find out more information about the VR kit loan program, including instructions and links to additional materials.

And if you apply ahead of time, you can definitely pick up your VR headset kit at this training event! You’ll get to keep the kit (each kit has 8 headsets) until schools close for winter break.

Please RSVP below if you plan to come to this training. Email any questions to vr@cmle.org 🙂

This program is funded in part with a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education using federal funding, CFDA 45.310 – Library Services and Technology Act, Grants to States Program (LS-00-19-0024-19). We would love you to send your thanks to @US_IMLS and with @MnDeptEd for providing this great program we can share with our members!

Episode 505: Collection Development

You can view our full shownotes page here!

In this episode, we will talk about one of the foundations of all library service: Collection Development. Without good collections, we might be nice places to visit – but it’s not a good library.

This week we have returning Guest Host Amy, from the Great River Regional Library System to help us get some ideas!

Thank you to Amy for joining us this week to discuss this topic!
Be sure you are subscribed to this podcast to get all the library skills directly to your favorite app each week. And you can check out our shownotes for each episode to get all the info we discussed, along with the links to more resources. Every episode we have created is available on our website!

If you want to enjoy our book group podcast, subscribe to Reading With Libraries.

Thanks for joining us this week! And check back in with us next week for another library competency!

Training Tips: The Six Ps of Publicity

You need to talk about your library, and all your cool stuff. And you need to do it All The Time! You never know when you are going to make a connection, or say something at just the right time for people to hear it.

Like anything, publicity has a system you can follow. In this case, it’s often called the six Ps of Publicity. We are going to walk through them briefly here, and you can find more info online or in books or articles about marketing.

  • The right Product: This includes all the stuff your library has to offer to your community members. You want it to be things they want to use, or things they need.
  • The right Price: Many of your items will not be charged for directly, but you may have some things that are for sale directly, or that you charge for (meeting room rentals, special access to researchers, etc.), and you want to be thinking about how to charge for that.
  • The right Place: You want to be connected to the community, so you need to be where they are. If you are in an elementary school, you are probably right in the same building; if you are in a university library,  an increasing number of your students are probably off campus and maybe not in your state or even your country. Develop online and mail resources to be in place!
  • Promote the right way: Too many libraries use marketing material that looks like a kid made it – and not in a good way. You want to know how to use good colors (not salmon, for example), how to use good graphics, and how to assemble material that does not look like an amateur did it. This can really diminish your image when done poorly.
  • To the right People: You want to know your community. This does not mean people who live near you; instead, a community is all the people who you are serving. So you want to be able to connect with individuals in that group, and with groups within the larger group. Different people will want different things; you need to know what they are.
  • At the right Point in time: Think about promoting programs and services: not too long in advance, or people will forget, and not too close to the time because people won’t be able to change plans.

Keep promoting yourself!!!

Remember: CMLE is here to help members who want to work on this kind of stuff, and are not sure where to start or want to bounce around some ideas. We are here for you!

CopyrightCopyright Tue. June 12

If you are in a library, you are probably the point person for answering copyright questions, or for enforcing copyright rules for your organization.

But: how confident do you feel in your knowledge of federal copyright law?? If you are like a lot of library people, you would probably feel better if you had more basic experience.

In this class we will walk through the basics of copyright law, and some ideas about training your community members in understanding and following copyright laws. (Pointing out some of the massive potential financial penalties can be helpful!)

Of course libraries are much more than “just” books, but books are our best-known product. In this class we are going to talk about creating a collection development policy specific to your library. As part of that process, we will also talk about strategies for weeding without tears – yours or anyone else’s! (It’s a challenge, but it can be done!)

Connecting to Your Community
Thurs. June21

Our whole job is to do some great customer service. We use a variety of tools: books, materials, programs. But our real job is to connect information to people in the communities we serve – things they need, things they want, things they may not even know exist! In this session we are going to talk about ways to identify the demographics of your community members (it’s not always obvious), and strategies to make those good connections.

Training for Information Literacy
Tue. June 26

When people ask what we do in libraries, talking about Information Literacy will always be the right answer! In this session we will chat about the basics of Information Literacy, then talk about strategies for training different age groups and community groups. Identifying fake news is not a challenge; let’s help the communities we serve to understand the information that is both accurate and best for their personal needs!
