Visit to the Annandale Public Library

One of the most fun parts of my job is the chance to go visit our member libraries! As someone who has spent years traveling around the country, visiting libraries, I can say there has never been a library that did not have something fun/interesting/unique to see. Being able to visit the CMLE members, and to see how much work they are doing in helping their communities is fantastic!

Annandale Public Library, part of the Great River Library System, is another library doing some great work. You can see immediately how much thought is put into making the library a welcoming place. Art in a library can be such an important tool for reaching out to patrons, and for helping everyone to feel comfortable.  (Check out our podcast, Linking Our Libraries, episode seven for a look at art in libraries!)

Look at these books and the plant! At CMLE HQ, we love plants and gardens (Podcast #7: Library Gardens, with a mention of Annandale!) As I always do, I struggled to keep from grabbing books off the shelves to take home. It’s a constant struggle for library people, when out visiting! Use IMLS Impact Statements by State (Libraries Transform)

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Everyday Advocates from 25 states who submitted IMLS impact statements in March and April, you’ll find a state-by-state listing of ready-to-tweet sound bytes formatted as Libraries Transform “Because…” statements. Use them to champion libraries in your home state this week and beyond! (http://www.ala.org/everyday-advocacy/virtual-library-legislative-day/use-imls-impact-statements-state)

Use Sample VLLD 17 Tweets

In addition to IMLS impact statements, you’ll find 12 ready-to-go tweets promoting the importance of federal funding for libraries. The best part? All you have to do is click each tweet link, and the text prefills for you! Just log in to Twitter, add handles for your members of Congress, and you’re all set. Read with CMLE: Goodreads books for May!

Looking for your next great read? We hope you will join us in our CMLE book groups! Take a look at what we will be reading during the month of May:

For our group CMLE Librarian Professionals we will be learning about persistence while reading Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth.
“In this must-read book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, athletes, students, and business people-both seasoned and new-that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called “grit.” Why do some people succeed and others fail?”

For our fiction group CMLE Librarians Enjoying Books we will be reading The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton.
“Fiona Sweeney wants to do something that matters, and she chooses to make her mark in the arid bush of northeastern Kenya. By helping to start a traveling library, she hopes to bring the words of Homer, Hemingway, and Dr. Seuss to far-flung tiny communities where people live daily with drought, hunger, and disease. Her intentions are honorable, and her rules are firm: due to the limited number of donated books, if any one of them is not returned, the bookmobile will not return.”

CMLE members can Shuffle Off to Buffalo, High School Library!

It has been great to visit our member libraries, with groups of CMLE members (and fans! all are welcome) – and we will keep up this program!! We are working on visiting all types of libraries, as we are a multitype system. We have much more in common in services and programs and materials, than the small differences in the focus of our different libraries.

Our next visit will be to the Buffalo High School. We will tour this library Tuesday, May 9th at 2:00. As always, we understand if people are coming from work and other obligations; so feel free to come a little late or depart early.

We will have two cars leaving from CMLE Headquarters, and you are welcome to ride with us if you would like to do that. There is plenty of parking here, where you can leave your car.

You may remember that CMLE has already had one visit to this library – and it was a lot of fun!

We would love to see all of you there, and will have a report back for anyone who is not able to make it. If there is interest, we may go have a late lunch/snack/chatting time after this visit. It’s always good to have a chance to see each other in person, and we should take advantage of it!

Are joining us for our Buffalo High School visit?(required)

Would you like to go out afterward for snacking and talking?

Visiting the Royalton Public Library

It is always fun to visit libraries, and of course this one was no exception!

This is a very neat location; it is multi-use, headquartering not only the library but also the police station and a local museum. These kinds of buildings are fun to visit, and it’s always interesting to see how the organizations can cooperate together!

This Children’s department has a great design. There are a lot of fun books, lots of colors and shapes to see, and it is a clearly defined area for kids to enjoy while parents and guardians browse nearby in easy sight.

And check out this very cool activity center! Kids can come in the library, and immediately head to a place where a variety of fun things will be available for them to play with in the library. (Okay, yes – I played with a few things too. Look how fun this is!) Continue reading Visiting the Royalton Public Library
