CMLE Resources: Linking Our Libraries Podcast

As we all prepare for a new semester to get started, and are wrapping up our Summer Fun Library Tour series, it’s good to get back in touch with library resources. And at CMLE, we are filled with all kinds of great things for you!

Each week, we will draw your attention to one of the many resources available to you from CMLE Headquarters. Our mission is to help build connections between members, across all types of libraries. We exist to share information across libraries (and archives, and museums, and history centers) – and we are always looking for more ways to make that happen! Check out our Subscribe To Us! page, for information on subscribing to all our stuff.

We will keep changing and providing new types of information and new formats, to meet the needs of our members. If you have a topic you want to learn more about – tell us! If you have a format you like to use to get information – let us know! Our entire purpose is to connect our 300+ members to each other, and to provide all kinds of professional information to make your jobs better.

One of our strategies for sharing information is to podcast it! Linking Our Libraries is our podcast, created at CMLE HQ. Each Thursday we talk about a different topic that may be helpful to our members – and to anyone across the Library and Information Science profession. (We like you all!) We talk for about 20 minutes, sharing professional information, maybe talking about some libraries, maybe chatting with a Guest Host.

We also have a short segment where we share books we are reading. We have heard from many of you that this is a favorite part; so stay tuned for an upcoming book-themed podcast! (Oh – maybe there should have been a spoiler alert tag before that? Well: Spoiler! New podcast is coming up this fall!)

The whole thing is deliberately cheerful in tone ( we laugh a lot!); and we keep each topic at a pretty introductory level. Libraries are fun places! So if you know nothing about the topic of the week – this is for you! If you need a refresher – this is for you! If you like to hear about the neat things happening across the profession – this is for you! Do you just want to support libraries? Again: this is for you!

Each episode also has a podcast page with our notes from the episode, links to everything we discussed, and often links to other material on our topic. If a topic is useful to you, we want to be sure you have access to the information in any format that works for you!

It’s always fun to keep an eye on searches, and especially on searches that lead back to your site. Some of the things people type are…odd, or at least very unexpected!

Day Seventy Two of the CMLE Summer Fun Library Tour!

Part of being in the library profession – maybe the main part – is sharing what you know. Blogger Jessica Olin has formalized one aspect of that sharing: passing on professional experience to newer library people. And, she invites you to share your experiences as well! Her blog is called Letters to a Young Librarians, and I encourage you to check it out and to consider contributing!

Here is an excerpt from her blog article on what she is doing:

Why I Decided to Start a Blog

“I had a realization recently: I have reached the end of the beginning of my career. After eight years as a professional librarian, it’s both comforting and intimidating to realize that I frequently (although not always) know what I’m talking about. The same events that helped me recognize this are also inspiring this blog. You see, I’ve been spending a lot of time talking with new and student librarians recently. Some of it has been in person. I work at a college near a university that has a library school, so I’ve been lucky enough to supervise a couple of students in their culminating experiences. Most of my interactions have been online, though, an experience that has been just as satisfying and frustrating as working one-on-one with graduate students.

Having people ask me to explain how I do certain parts of my job, or how I found my first professional position, or even how I decide what to wear to work on a daily basis, has helped me clarify so much of what I love (and hate) about librarianship. I know that it is basic pedagogy – teaching something you know helps solidify that knowledge better than almost any other method – but my reaction still startled me a bit. I found myself thinking about a book I read last year: Letters to a Young Poet (yes, the title of this blog comes from that book). I was standing in Rainer Maria Rilke’s shoes, and I think I understand what he may have felt: that a mentor gets as much out of the relationship as a mentee. I hope that what I’ve shared has helped others navigate their career path, but I know that being able to talk about my experiences and my philosophy has been invaluable to me. I have a clearer understanding of where I want to go next with my career, of what is really important to me. This blog is going to be a big part of that.I want this blog to be about more than an experienced librarian dispensing advice to the new kids, however. In my conversations with individuals and groups who are joining my profession, it seems that there is a gap between what library programs are teaching and what new professionals will need to know in order to be successful.”

Mark Your Calendars: Welcome Fall and the Solar Eclipse with CMLE!

Monday, August 21st is going to be an exciting day! Not only will CMLE HQ be hosting a Back-To-School gathering for our members but it is also the date of the solar eclipse!

Join us at CMLE between 11am – 2pm  to celebrate a new school year and also the eclipse! We’ll have solar system themed snacks and music (and eclipse viewing glasses!) but also back-to-school decorations, a raffle, and of course, lots of great conversation about libraries and upcoming plans for the school year!

We really hope you can make it to celebrate the start of fall and return to school! Send us an email with any questions.

It’s Here: Season Two of Linking Our Libraries Podcast!!

We are SO excited to share with all of our library people our second season of Linking Our Libraries Podcast!

We are continuing to talk about all things libraries in order to help our members and all library folks stay informed about important library topics. Some that we will cover this season include programming, tech training, strategic planning, and customer service. We have been lucky enough to get the perspective and expertise of some fantastic guest hosts (if you are one of those people, THANK YOU for participating!) and hope you enjoy hearing from fellow CMLE members.
