In the wake of the Presidential budget release last week, we’ve been receiving increased calls and emails containing questions about National Library Legislative Day 2017. Below are a few FAQs – please feel free to send this out to your listservs, etc, to help get the word around.
Is there still time to register for National Library Legislative Day 2017:
Absolutely! The deadline for registering online is April 8th and after that we will only be able to accept registrations at the door of the event. Registration information is available at ala.org/nlld.
The American Library Association (ALA) and Google, Inc. are launching the “Libraries Ready to Code” project to investigate the current nature of coding activities in public and school libraries for youth and broaden the reach and scope of this work.
“Libraries today are less about what we have on our shelves and more about what we do for and with people in our schools, campuses and communities,” said ALA President Sari Feldman. “Learning for children and youth today is more flexible, more self-directed, and with greater opportunities to not just use content, but to create and collaborate digitally. Library professionals are committed to facilitating both individual opportunity for all and advancing community progress. This new project with Google sits squarely in our modern public mission.”
Even though every day is a great day to celebrate libraries, there is a special week each year designated to highlight their importance and awesomeness!
This year, that week is from April 9 – 15 and “is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support.”

At CMLE Headquarters we are fans of all types of libraries. Being a multi-library system, we know the value of the work that all libraries – regardless of focus – do for their communities. But even we are surprised by the breadth of information available in some libraries!
One of the primary ethical obligations for library people is to preserve the privacy of their patrons. This can be tough to do sometimes, and we can be leaking information in ways we have not even considered. To help us all provide quality service, the Library Information Technology Association, working with the Intellectual Freedom Committee, has put together some checklists for you to use in your own library.
Remember: even if you are alone in your library, you are part of the CMLE system, and part of the larger profession of library and information science! We are all working together to provide great service to all our communities!
