Branch Out is a biannual conference, which began in 1992, designed by and for library paraprofessionals, support staff, and media specialists. Feature Libraries: Preservation Week April 21-22nd

Only recently (2010) has the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) began to observe Preservation Week. This year, during the week of  April 21-27th, take time to highlight your community and other local organizations by promoting preservation at your library.

Assistance on how to celebrate preservation in both big and small ways can be found @ your library or by going to the preservation toolkit developed by ALCTS. You can also peruse the ALCTS event toolkit for additional planning and promotional ideas!

Developing the Capacity of School Librarians to Effectively Serve Students with Disabilities

Since 2011, Project ENABLE has been training teams of librarians and teachers in the best practices for serving children with disabilities in their schools. The Center for Digital Literacy and the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University are pleased to offer a free, interdisciplinary professional development training program for school librarians on Friday, May 3rd from 3-4PM (CST).

This one hour webinar will (1) introduce school librarians to Project ENABLE’s goals, curriculum, and ubiquitous free online resources; (2) increase school librarians’ understanding of their important role in providing meaningful educational opportunities for students with disabilities; (3) improve their awareness of facilitators and barriers to providing inclusive library programs and services; and (4) introduce them to how two 2011 Project ENABLE workshop participants have been using Project ENABLE practices in their school.

34th Annual Children’s Literature Workshop!

St. Cloud State University (SCSU) is hosting the 34th Annual Children’s Literature Workshop (CLW) on June 17th & 18th. This year’s keynote speaker will be award winning writer Avi. Author of more than 60 books, Avi’s work includes picture books, adventure, fantasy and historical fiction.  He will be joined at the event by Laura Purdie Salas, author of more than 100 kids and teen books, and Julie Riemer who will be discussing the best in new books. Participants will attend interactive small group sessions with MN author Debra Frasier, MN author Sheila O’Connor, Children’s Literature Network co-founder Vicki Palmquist, and Library Media Specialist Laurie Conzemius. Wrap up session will showcase MN author, singer, and songwriter Dennis Warner.

In addition, this workshop offers book discounts, CEUs and an optional credit (1) from SCSU. There are special rates for students and groups of 5 or more from the same organization-click here for additional information and to register.
