New Minnesota Reflections website is faster and mobile-friendly

From Minitex, by Zachariah Miller

The Minnesota Digital Library has launched a faster, mobile-friendly website for it’s primary project, Minnesota Reflections. Minnesota Reflections is a database of 53,967 digitized original materials shared by 190 cultural heritage organizations located across Minnesota. The new site was announced today at the MDL Annual Meeting in St. Paul by Jason Roy, head of the University of Minnesota Libraries’ Digital Library Services unit.

In his announcement, Roy highlighted the new site’s faster load times, phone- and tablet-friendly layouts, and several powerful new features:

  • Site visitors can now browse the collection geographically by zooming into a map and clicking on pins.
  • New, easy-to-use search-limiting facets enable users to quickly narrow their search results by type (still image, text, etc.), date, topic, contributing organization, and many more.
  • Users can easily view audio and video content directly on the site using updated streaming technology, including captioning.
  • Social sharing links and citations in multiple formats make it simple for users to cite content and share it.

The project team included Scott Hreha, Link Swanson, and Paul Swanson from the Minitex IT unit and Jason Roy and Chad Fennell of the University of Minnesota Libraries’ Digital Library Services unit. The site is located at reflections.mndigital.org.

New Project Launched: MN Water Research Digital Library

Minnesota has a new digital repository, all about water research. The Minnesota Water Research Library has digital materials in PDF format and “provides one-stop access to all types of water research, enabling water managers, researchers, engaged citizens and others to easily find, share, and coordinate research to support their efforts to protect, conserve, manage and restore water in Minnesota.”

PALS (Project for Automated Library Systems) and the MN Water Research Library are looking forward to working together and providing an example to other state agencies looking for a way to manage their digital materials.

“Intertwined with American History:
Carnegie Hall History Preserved in Thousands of Theatre Programs
********************************************************

The Carnegie Hall Archives was established in 1986, in anticipation of the Hall’s 100th anniversary. “A formal decision was made to establish an archive with the goal to curate retrospective exhibitions and to document past, present, and future events,” says Gino Francesconi, Director of the Archives. The theatre programs formed the basis of the collection at the start, dating back to the first performance at the “Music Hall” on May 5, 1891 with a concert by Tchaikovsky.  “The theatre programs are unique snapshots of what was going on in the city culturally at the time,” comments Kathleen Sabogal, Assistant Director of the Archives.  “The advertising and the articles are as interesting as the performance listings.” Continue reading Carnegie Hall’s History Preserved in Theater Programs from 1891 to the Present

Digital Learning Objects survey

Framework NETP
Does your library use Digital Learning Objects (videos, podcasts, tutorials, etc.) as part of your instruction program? We are interested in what motivates the decision to re-use an existing DLO or to create a new one, and we’d love to hear from you. We are running a survey aimed at anyone involved with developing or using DLOs for library instruction. This survey should not take longer than 30 minutes and has been IRB approved by Marquette University (WI). You can find the survey at the following link: https://marquette.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9ExZNzKZMZ1ulKd

This survey will close on March 31, 2017.

If you have any questions about this research project, please contact Heather James (heather.james@marquette.edu), Elizabeth Gibes (elizabeth.gibes@marquette.edu), or Eric Kowalik (eric.kowalik@marquette.edu).
