See to Read

For many children, learning to read is challenging enough. Learning to read if they have an undetected vision problem makes the process even more difficult. In Oregon, they began the program “See to Read” in 2013 that aims to correct this issue, with the help of public libraries!

Check out this article in OLA Quarterly that describes how the program began through a partnership with eye care professionals, legislators, and public libraries. Then visit the “See To Read” site to learn more about this great program!

What is “See to Read”?

  • A series of free vision screenings for children at public libraries
    throughout Oregon.
  • A campaign based on the belief that no child should begin learning to read with an undetected vision problem.
  • A community service project that helps children be ready to read and that links families, schools, local service clubs, and legislators to public libraries.
  • A way to assist implementation of the law that all children entering public kindergarten in Oregon must have a vision screening.
  • A pure good.

National Summer Learning Association Now Accepting Applications from Summer Learning Programs for the 2017 New York Life Foundation Excellence in Summer Learning Awards Since 2004, more than 500 programs serving nearly 500,000 youth have applied, offering the most comprehensive look at the national summer learning landscape in America Baltimore, MD.

The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) is seeking applications from summer learning programs nationwide for the 2017 New York Life Foundation Excellence in Summer Learning Awards. The Excellence Award and Founder’s Award recognize outstanding summer programs and models that strive to curb learning loss in children and youth between pre-kindergarten and twelfth grade. The New York Life Foundation honors programs with a monetary award and NSLA will announce award recipients on National Summer Learning Day, July 13, 2017. Bridging the Language Gap

A few weeks ago at the Long Prairie Public Library, I was part of a unique collaboration of teachers, students and librarians. We had a common goal of sharing information about using Great River Regional Library services with a class of English language learners, but we spoke three different languages. How did this work, you ask? Here are the highlights:

  • The environment was noisy and chaotic.
  • Many voices were talking at once.
  • My agenda did not go according to plan.
  • I did not cover all the material I brought.
  • It was about the most inspiring class I have been a part of!

Background: The Library Services Coordinator in Long Prairie, Nancy Potter, has developed a relationship with the local instructor of Adult Basic Education classes in her area, which includes this class of English Language Learners. Amy, the instructor, is determined to get her students out of the classroom and into the community, and the first place she thought of to visit was the local library! After she contacted Nancy Potter in Long Prairie, Nancy contacted me for reinforcement, since one of the duties of the three Patron Services Librarians at GRRL is to assist at any of our 32 branches with class visits and information presentations. I was charged with creating a presentation on GRRL services for the adult ELL students.

In my last post, I explained what Creative Commons licenses are. But how can you make use of these licenses and incorporate items that are licensed under them in your library? Perhaps not surprisingly, an array of resources have emerged to make it approachable to use Creative Commons licenses and to aggregate Creative Commons-licensed items.
