James Patterson is donating money to schools for books!

James Patterson is giving away more money to get kids reading. And your school library could get some.

In the third installment of his School Library Campaign in partnership with Scholastic Reading Club, Patterson — author of books for middle grades and adults — is donating $1.75 million to school libraries around the country.

This time around, the plan focuses on teachers. Patterson will award $500 grants to 3,500 teachers in grades pre-K through 12 in U.S. schools to improve their classroom libraries. The funds can be used to buy new books, expand programming or even build more bookshelves, if that’s what’s needed.

“Many kids rely solely on their classroom bookshelves for reading material, particularly in schools without a library,” Patterson said in a statement. “I’m excited to expand the reach of the program, and make a positive impact on teachers who are working with students all day, every day, in every school in the country.”

Here is the application. Pass this on to your teachers; and we can help with any part of it!

Travel to Cuba with the LAII and LACC for a “A Revolutionary Perspective on Education”

Flag of Cuba

July 14-23, 2017
“The LAII and LACC are pleased to announce a special international program designed specifically for educators: “Cuba: A Revolutionary Perspective on Education.”  We are offering a special rate to educators, which makes this one of the least expensive programs to Cuba offered anywhere in the country. Moreover, as Cuba becomes a more accessible tourist destination, we expect that in-country expenses will only continue to increase – which means that this may be one of the least expensive programs for years to come!

We are subsidizing the costs of this program because we are committed to fostering international awareness among educators and providing them with the resources they need to bring international awareness into their classrooms.

Lastly, we ask for your help in spreading the news about this program! Please forward this email to your friends and colleagues.

Overview
Join Florida International University and The University of New Mexico for a 9-day trip to Cuba in which we’ll focus on educational practice and philosophy on the island. We’ll visit museums with stunning collections, meet with grassroots organizations working on literacy, environmental science, and the humanities, interact with k-12 teachers and administrators, tour university campuses and meet with professors, and dialogue with community members about the role of society and culture in education.

My mother worked in a library for more 36 years before retiring and then re-entering the workforce to work in yet another library. And, throughout the last ten years, each member of my immediate family, including myself, has worked in a library. So to me the sight and smell of books brings back a host of familial memories. But I never really understood what created the unique scents of a book/book collection. I always suspected it was a concoction consisting of one part ink to two parts paper-lovingly combined with a pinch of dust.  Did you know AbeBooks, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., created a short video answering this very question. Click here to listen to their explanation.
