public-domain-images-free-stock-photos-high-quality-resolution-downloads-public-domain-archive-10Time for an update! Beginning May 9th and scheduled to be completed by January 2017, the Alcuin Library at St. John’s University will be undergoing a renovation and addition.

This article from the St. Cloud Times explains the project will cost $25 million and will add 22,000 square feet.

There are three main goals the renovation and addition of a learning commons hope to fulfill:

  1. Allow students to study and mingle together
  2. Help students access emerging technologies while guided by input from professionals
  3. Accommodate the changing teaching and learning styles that encourage collaboration

The updated library will also feature more opportunities for group and creative work, with a 3-D printer, media studio, and virtual reality devices.

Finally, the writing and data analysis assistance available to students will be located in the library for easier access.

SJU Alcuin Library renovation and Learning Commons

sjulibThe academic library at St. John’s University was recently in the news due to some construction and renovation that officially began in June. Kathy Parker, Director of Libraries, said the project is a “culmination of years of mental energy…” and is “now becoming visible.” Check out floor plans and other information on this website. Besides a general refurbish of the space, there will also be:

  • Construction of an Archives and Special Collections Area in the basement of Alcuin Library.
  • Installation of a new elevator that will service all four floors of Alcuin Library.
  • Construction of The Saint John’s Bible gallery in the auditorium formerly know as AV1.

St. John’s is also adding a Learning Commons space that will be an addition to the Library and will start May 2016. The Learning Commons space will have “classrooms, and study spaces that will enable students to take advantage of technology…” According to St. John’s President Michael Hemesath, “Alcuin Library and Learning Commons will be the academic heart and soul of our campus.”

Check out this video where St. John’s President Hemesath is talking about the impact these developments will have on student experience.

Last October,  the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University (CSB/SJU) launched a campaign featuring librarians in Halloween-type costumes sporting the slogan, “Librarians aren’t scary – they’re scary good at research.” So this year, the Marketing Committee was challenged to develop another campaign to promote awareness of Library/Media/Archives to advance a greater recognition of the value of these services appealing to a broader audience.   Kathy Parker, Director of Libraries, Media, and Archives at CSB/SJU said, “This specific campaign was designed to help make the librarians more approachable in the eyes of our students –to show them we have a sense of humor and maybe aren’t as stuffy as librarian stereotypes can suggest.”

Eight images were printed as posters and placed throughout campus.  The digital versions of these posters have appeared in the CSB/SJU’s social media, including Facebook and Twitter (@csbsjulibraries).  In addition, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) has also featured these funny, targeted posters  (link 1, link 2.)
