This week we are talking about Staff Development, and we have a Guest Host: Elizabeth Proell, from St. Cloud Public Library.

You know that to do any job in a library means you have to keep building and honing your skills. Everything we do changes, develops, and evolves – and this will never stop.  If there ever was a time in libraries where we could just coast along on skills we learned twenty years ago, those days are long gone! Technology, automation, and streamlining of all organizations and workers means that we are constantly looking for better, faster, cheaper ways to do all the work we do every day. And what that really means for all of us is that we have to not only keep up with things happening around us – but we need to be out there ahead of our patrons so we are ready to help them build their skills! It’s not just embarrassing to not be able to answer a question on email or web design or VR technology – it is bad practice.

We know it is a challenge!! Your budget is stretched to the max already, your time is also filled as full as you can get it. So we are here to help you! CMLE’s website is filled with information and links to all kinds of great places to go to help you build your skills.

  • We maintain a Continuing Education calendar.
  • We share all kinds of places to take classes, either for free or at a reduced cost – and we offer up to $300 in scholarship money to offset the cost of any training you can identify!
  • We are building webinars and in-person training sessions for you, to work though any time.
  • We are also available to come to your library (or archive, or history center, or other organization) and talk with you about some training ideas, or to do some training based on your individual library’s needs.
  • We have material on our site for this episode; and we also have material all kinds of useful library-related skills, available in our Skills Toolbox section of our site.

  • Welcome to the 2017 SELCO Camp Read-a-Lot

    We are happy to bring you the 9th Annual Camp Read-a-Lot!  A professional development opportunity for those who work with children’s literature, focusing on specifically on grades 2-5.  Our campers have the chance to read from a set list of books prior to camp and then spend the day discussing the books with their peers.  They’ll also have a chance to hear from Dr. Sarah Park Dahlen, Assistant Professor in St. Catherine University’s Master of Library Information Science Program, and Minnesota children’s book author Lauren Stringer.

ALA, Harwood Institute announce 2017 Public Innovators Lab for Libraries community engagement training opportunity

The American Library Association (ALA) and The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation have announced their fifth annual training opportunity to help libraries strengthen their role as agents of positive change in their communities.

The Public Innovators Lab for Libraries will be held Oct. 18 to 20, 2017, at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Librarians, community partners and stakeholders in libraries of all types — public, academic, school and specialty libraries — are encouraged to participate.

Through discussions, hands-on activities, and collaborations with like-minded library professionals, participants will learn to

  • tap libraries’ natural values to contribute to the greater good and bring their communities together;
  • surface people’s shared aspirations for their communities and help bring them to life;
  • convene and lead productive, insightful community conversations; and
  • become stewards of public knowledge.

Participants must register online by Friday, Oct. 13. The cost is $1,495 for the first person from an organization and $995 for each additional person. Team participation is encouraged.

Training Showcase @ Annual – Come show off!

“We are still welcoming showcasers, if you want to show off your training abilities. Host a table at the Training Showcase – fun, fast and casual!

Coming to ALA Annual? Is training your superpower?

We would like to invite you to consider hosting a table at our Training Showcase at ALA Annual in Chicago on Sunday, June 25 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm on the Exhibit Floor.

The showcase is an annual event sponsored by our round table to give trainers and training organizations a chance to showcase best practices in library training, learning, and continuing education. All types of libraries, and staff and public trainers will enjoy coming to learn, share, and meet new people. This year we are going to have a casual, fun, atmosphere with refreshments and prizes for participants who visit tables.

Should you host a table?

The Showcase normally attracts 80-100 attendees – all of whom are interested in training and staff development. Whether you are a training vendor, a library staff trainer, a library consultant, or involved with state, consortium, or national training, you have expertise to share. You will have your own table (at no charge) and will be sharing at least one training tip—on whatever topic you’d like. We will share your contact information so that participants can follow-up. Please let me know if you are interested in participating – we would love to have you as a part of this event!

AASL President’s Program addresses “What an administrator wants”

CHICAGO – Scott Beck, head principal at Norman (Okla.) High School, will conclude the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Awards Ceremony & President’s Program taking place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, as part of the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

“As school librarians, we know how critical it is to the success of our library programs to have a supportive administrator,” said AASL President Audrey Church. “I am very excited to have Dr. Scott Beck as my President’s Program speaker. Dr. Beck knows what a 21st-century library program that contributes to student learning looks like and understands the key role that today’s school librarian plays in instruction in his/her school. We look forward to him sharing his perspective on how school librarians transform student learning.”

Beck is currently the head principal at Norman High School, serving 2,000 students in grades 9-12. Over the course of his 17-year career in education, Beck has also served as an assistant principal and a National Board Certified social studies teacher. As principal, Beck has overseen a 30-million-dollar renovation at the high school, including a state-of-the-art learning commons and a 1:1 laptop initiative.

Beck presents nationally and internationally on educational issues. Past presentations include “Library as School Hub” and “Building the Eclectic High School” presented at the 2012 and 2013 High Schools that Work National Conferences. He holds a Master’s degree in education administration, curriculum and supervision and a Ph.D. in education leadership and policy studies from the University of Oklahoma.

The AASL Awards Ceremony and President’s Program is an annual event featuring prominent experts on issues relevant to school librarianship and is open to all registered conference attendees.
