Hello, fellow book-loving library people!

Have you been taking part in CMLE’s Goodreads book group? For the month of October we read and discussed two books. In our CMLE Librarian Professionals group, we learned about getting organized and happy with The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. Our other group, CMLE Librarians Enjoying Books, had fun reading about a Minnesotan librarian and her helpful, conveniently magical, cats in Curiosity Thrilled the Cat by Sofie Kelly.

But November is quickly approaching! We are excited to announce our book choices for next month:

cover_good_2_gr8CMLE Librarian Professionals will be reading Good to Great – Why Some Companies Make the Leap…and Other’s Don’t by Jim Collins. Goodreads summarizes the premise of the book as:  “But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?” We will discuss the ideas presented in the book and learn more about achieving success. You can read the author’s top 10 tips to improve your company in this article from Inc.com.

dewey-library-catCMLE Librarians Enjoying Books will read Dewey: The Small-Town Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron. Dewey was abandoned in a library in Spencer, Iowa and eventually became the library’s cat. We are excited to read about his journey!

Watch this video featuring Dewey and friends:

Like last month, we’ll have limited copies available of each book to borrow, so let us know if you want to be put on the borrowing list.

We are looking forward to another month of reading!

Reading is FUN-damental at CMLE!

Are you reading our October book group selections?

At CMLE Headquarters, we are big fans of books and reading -and as we are in a system filled with library people we know our members likewise are readers! So each month we will read a fiction book with a library theme attached, and a nonfiction book with some applicability to making our work lives better.

What are we reading for November?? That is up to you!

We have a poll up on our Goodreads page for you to select your choice for the next book. The poll will be open through October 26, giving us a couple of weeks to still read our October book and to think about November.

Remember: these are very low-key book groups! We all just want to read books, and have a place to talk about ideas if we feel like sharing. As library people we spend so much time working with books, it can be hard to remember to take time to enjoy them. CMLE is here to help with that!

So read, enjoy, post discussions if you wish – and just have a good time with books!

Are you an adult who loves to read children and teen books?

Chapter & Verse Book Club is coming to St. Cloud. The Children’s Literature Network is the sponsor of the 8 chapters  (to date) nationwide. The Great River Regional Library in St. Cloud will partner as the meeting spot.

The club will be facilitated by SCSU faculty member Marcia Thompson (mthompson@stcloudstate.edu or 320-308-2120). It will meet the third Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm starting September 19.

This month’s books are Nobody’s Secret by Michaela MacColl and Emily by Michael Bedard, illustrated by Barbara Cooney. Click here for more information and a look at the upcoming Chapter and Verse monthly meetings and book selections.

Social Reading: The Next Big Thing?

So, I came back from the MLA and MEMO conferences charged up with new ideas, which is a good thing!

And, maybe because of some new awareness, three interesting things have converged in my world within the last two weeks….

  1. One task I assigned myself is to finally enter my book collections into Goodreads, and take the hundreds of scraps of paper containing  books I want to read, and enter them in my “to read” Goodreads shelf too. Now that there is a mobile app, I can go to the library and easily pull up my wish list right on my phone. And yes, eventually I can even scan in the new bestsellers while out shopping, that I want to read, but am too frugal to buy! So, I am well on my way with Goodreads!
  2. Then, I heard about Subtext, an app that allows groups of people to read books together online, and comment in the margins, highlight text, do polls, and other things you might expect to do verbally in a face-to-face bookclub. Free books, by grade levels too, so this app has K-12 schools written all over it!
  3. Then, I discovered a literature blog  called, The Hub: Your Connection to Teen Reads, from YALSA,the Young Adult Library Services Association of ALA. This site provides a one-stop-shop for finding information about teen reads, including recommendations for great teen reads, information about YALSA lists and awards, book trailers and other book-related videos, and best of the best lists. They also just did a series of posts about “The Next Big Thing”, and the one about social reading caught my eye. Amazingly, they mention Goodreads and Subtext as tools for new online bookclub possibilities. So now, my head is buzzing with other new possibilities.  Read the full  blog post at http://tinyurl.com/9mkpygg.

Please share your comments about whether you use Goodreads or Subtext, and whether you already host or participate in online book clubs in your personal or professional life. Maybe we can form a little bookclub community!

Explore the Magical World of Harry Potter

Author J. K. Rowling launched the Harry Potter Reading Book Club for young readers in July. The website, sponsored by Rowling’s US publisher, Scholastic, is intended as a resource to help teachers and parents encourage children to read. The site includes a guide for everything about the boy wizard, an overview of the series of Harry Potter and information about the author. New activities will be added to the site every month.
