Clicking the Bait: Helping Patrons Decipher Fake News and Alternative Facts
Do you know about the ALA Sustainability Round Table (SustainRT)? Not a SustainRT member? Log into your ALA Connect account and add us to your ALA membership. It’s only $10 to join and right now, SustainRT is looking to grant a $500 Travel Award to one individual (must be member of SustainRT) for the purpose of attending ALA Annual 2017. The award will come in the form of a reimbursement and may be applied to travel, lodging or conference registration expenses. The theme for this year’s award is “Green is the new Black.” Applicants are invited to submit a 60 second (or less) video explaining how libraries can empower their customers and communities toward a greener, more sustainable future. Creativity is encouraged! Deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM on March 15, 2017. The Travel Award committee will select the top three videos and post them to the SustainRT Facebook page by March 22, 2017. The video to receive the most “likes” by 11:59 PM on March 31, 2017 will win the $500 Travel Award (in the event of a tie, the Travel Award judges determine the winner). Providing tech information and resources for your patrons can be a continuing challenge in libraries! There are several discussions floating around the library world right now about different areas in this topic; so we are sharing one here to see what kind of resources might be available for your own work.
The question:
I am wanting to give my teen homeschooling community access to easy and fun access to beginner’s coding courses here in the teen department of my library. Where would you suggest I start? (I have absolutely NO knowledge on how to code or where to begin!)
The RSS Marketing and Public Relations for Reference Services Committee needs your help! Last semester we conducted a survey where we asked participants to share their thoughts about their challenges in marketing reference services. Results indicate most libraries struggle to communicate the impact of their reference services and need more assistance in doing targeted marketing a well as reaching new populations. When asked about preferred format, the overwhelming majority of participants indicated they would prefer toolkit-type materials they can adapt for their own institutions and we are in the process of developing a prototype utilizing a Google Folders approach in order to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible and ensure ease of updating.
A group of CMLE members visited the Great River Library System’s library in St Cloud. And as you can see by the pictures, we had a great time!

Visiting libraries to see what is happening in other places, and connecting with other CMLE members, have been some of the top requests from people across the system. We will be making monthly group visits to libraries of all types in CMLE. Let us know when we can come visit you!!
