Digitize your materials: It’s good!

From the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL):

The ACRL Instruction Section, Instructional Technologies Committee, has published their latest Tips and Trends article, “Digital Labs,” written by Suzanne Julian and Patricia McPherson. Tips and Trends introduces and discusses new, emerging or even familiar technologies that can be used in library instruction.  In the latest installment, learn about digital labs in academic libraries, the services they provide and how they can benefit library instruction. “Digital Labs” is freely available at http://bit.ly/tipsandtrendsfa16.

Our committee would like to see what’s happening at the digital lab in your library and invite you to share images to our Digital Labs album. We developed this album because we wanted to create a resource for digital lab personnel to highlight their space and a forum where those considering developing a digital lab or makerspace can turn to for ideas or inspiration. We welcome your contributions and encourage you to share it with colleagues who might want to share their work.

Western Sydney University and ProQuest team up for free digital textbooks

Digital textbooks can encourage learning

Textbooks have long been a source of financial strain on college students, and can sometimes interfere with the accessibility of higher education as a whole.

To try and help with this issue, Western Sydney University and ProQuest teamed up to provide free digital textbooks to incoming university students through the University’s library. This article from No Shelf Required includes statements from both the University and ProQuest regarding the collaboration. Some of the goals for collaboration include making the cost of college more affordable, and textbooks more accessible, particularly to students with disabilities. The digital textbooks come from 60 academic publishers and can be accessed by students via Ebook Central which is ProQuest’s ebook platform. Contribute to the ACRL Framework Sandbox

If you are in an academic library, or looking at academic information (as many of you are), you may want to be involved in a sandbox project from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Biking while working – at the library!

Read the article here – these look so fun!

In this article from American Libraries, Troy University in Alabama is featured because of their awesome new additions – six exercise bikes with tables for laptops that were purchased for student use!
Three bikes are available in the library’s student space at the main campus in Troy, and three are available at the university’s extension campus in Dothan, AL. The additions have been so popular and well-received that the university has ordered three more bikes and six elliptical machines that can be used under tables while students are seated!

Academic Librarians: What Do You Think About Change??

As you know, at CMLE Headquarters, we want to help you stay connected with not only the community of our system, but also the wider library community. So this is another piece of information we pass on for you!

From the Request:

You are invited to participate in a survey designed to provide insight into academic librarians’ perception of change. You will be asked to express your degree of agreement or disagreement with statements or scenarios related to change.

We ask that only academic librarians participate in this survey. We will use this data as part of our research paper to be presented at the 2017 Association for College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference.

The survey will take approximately 5-8 minutes to complete, and you will be able to exit the survey at any time by closing your browser window or tab.
