Survey: Awareness of Professional Ethics

“Greetings!

I am writing to you on behalf of Sara Dallas, chair of ALA’s Committee on Professional Ethics with a request for your participation in a survey and for your help disseminating the invitation to any and all librarians. The purpose of this survey is to examine the awareness of professional ethics and principles within the LIS profession.  For the purposes of this survey, we will define professional ethics and principles to include access to information, intellectual freedom, privacy, copyright, and professional conduct.

  • ALA leadership, including councilors, divisions, and round tables (and their staff liaisons)

Please take a moment, in addition to taking the survey yourself, to share it with the listservs that you are a part of and the library related social media channels that you manage. Specifically, please invite local librarians that may not have professional memberships. Sara would like to be able to review results at Annual Conference so she is asking for a deadline of May 23, 2017.

“Are you going to the ALA Annual Conference in June? The San Jose State University School of Information is holding a unique one-unit course during the conference that is available to non-matriculated students through our Open Classes program. If this will be your first time attending ALA Annual or you want to take full advantage of the conference experience, this course was designed for you!

Taught by iSchool lecturer Patty Wong, the “Professional Socialization and Leadership” course examines current trends in the information profession. Students will attend daily seminars, participate in a number of special programs, and attend the conference trade show. They will also have the opportunity to meet with prominent ALA member leaders and get a bird’s eye view of association governance.”

Going to ALA? Make a video to apply for a travel award!

Do you know about the ALA Sustainability Round Table (SustainRT)?  Not a SustainRT member? Log into your ALA Connect account and add us to your ALA membership. It’s only $10 to join and right now, SustainRT is looking to grant a $500 Travel Award to one individual (must be member of SustainRT) for the purpose of attending ALA Annual 2017.  The award will come in the form of a reimbursement and may be applied to travel, lodging or conference registration expenses. The theme for this year’s award is “Green is the new Black.” Applicants are invited to submit a 60 second (or less) video explaining how libraries can empower their customers and communities toward a greener, more sustainable future. Creativity is encouraged!  Deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM on March 15, 2017. The Travel Award committee will select the top three videos and post them to the SustainRT Facebook page by March 22, 2017. The video to receive the most “likes” by 11:59 PM on March 31, 2017 will win the $500 Travel Award (in the event of a tie, the Travel Award judges determine the winner). MANGO/NMRT Professional Development Grant

Apply Now for the 2017 MANGO/NMRT Professional Development Grant

Deadline: Tuesday, March 7, 2016 at 5 pm (EST)

We are excited to announce that members of ALA’s New Members Round Table (NMRT) can apply to receive a $1000 grant, which will assist with expenses to attend the ALA Annual Conference, June 22 – June 27, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. This award is generously sponsored by MANGO Languages.

You must be a current member of NMRT in order to apply. To join NMRT, visit the ALA website and follow the “Join ALA” link to add NMRT to your ALA membership, it is well worth the low cost!  Successful applicants will show their attendance at ALA will impact their home institution, NMRT or another ALA organization, and their personal professional development.

Make a poster; go to ALA Annual in Chicago!

poster presentations are a fun way to meet people who do what you do!

CMLE libraries have a lot of great things to offer their communities and the library profession. And we would like to see you showing it off!

Do you have an interesting program? An exciting event? A neat way to organize, arrange, display, or circulate your materials?? Make a poster, and share it!

Posters are very simple to make, and at Headquarters we can give you all the help you need. It is a great way to share information with colleagues, and you have the chance to learn all kinds of interesting ideas from your fellow presenters – who will all be sharing information on a topic similar to yours.

You do not need to have a completed poster when you submit the application, so you have plenty of time to think about graphic ways to show your neat stuff! (The design element is pretty low key; everyone there just wants to hear about your work!)

And if you want to go to the Annual Conference (you do not need to be an ALA member to attend!), exhibiting a poster is a good way to help convince your supervisor you should attend!
