For libraries, there are clear benefits for getting involved in the biking world including making libraries friendlier to existing biking patrons and bringing in new patrons through programs and outreach.

In this workshop, Mana Tominaga and Emily Weak of the Oakland Public Library—both avid cyclists—will show you how bikes can enhance your library’s participation in your community’s vision for health and sustainability and help forge strong local connections. You’ll come away from this workshop with practical strategies to make your library more bike friendly and more bike focused.

“Are you going to the ALA Annual Conference in June? The San Jose State University School of Information is holding a unique one-unit course during the conference that is available to non-matriculated students through our Open Classes program. If this will be your first time attending ALA Annual or you want to take full advantage of the conference experience, this course was designed for you!

Taught by iSchool lecturer Patty Wong, the “Professional Socialization and Leadership” course examines current trends in the information profession. Students will attend daily seminars, participate in a number of special programs, and attend the conference trade show. They will also have the opportunity to meet with prominent ALA member leaders and get a bird’s eye view of association governance.”

If you’ve been feeling the need to network or to update some of your professional skills, make sure to keep your eyes on CMLE’s Continuing Education calendar!

The calendar is located on our Continuing Education page, which features a Google calendar that is updated daily with new learning opportunities. We include a variety of events like webinars, online courses, in-person conferences, workshops, and yes, even free opportunities!

The page also has links to organizations like Library Juice, TIES, and the AASL’s eAcademy that offer their own training and development opportunities.

“Hi all,

I’m helping spread the word about a digital privacy training project I’ve been working on at Brooklyn Public Library with some partners. Please read on and be in touch if you have any questions.

Do you want strategies for helping library patrons understand vulnerabilities in their online communications and transactions? Are you looking to train library staff in digital privacy concepts? Do you want to better understand networks, privacy-protecting tools, and risk assessment in a library context?

At the Data Privacy Project, librarians, community activists, tech experts, educators, and researchers have developed learning modules and curriculum materials to support library staff. Handouts and slideshows can be adapted for trainings in any type of library, and on the Data Privacy Project website people can view a historical timeline, data flows diagrams, and a risk assessment exercise with sample patron profiles. All our training material is available under a Share Alike 4.0 Creative Commons license.
